Renewing their vows, 19th-century style

Jim and Rita Acker have plenty of experience portraying other people. Jim Acker, for instance, has been told that he bears a striking resemblance to Major Marcus A. Reno, so much so that he has portrayed the controversial 19th-century officer in several historical re-enactments. Rita Acker, like her husband, is a member of the re-enactor group Frontier Army of the Dakotas, and she has played servants and other female roles in historical re-enactments.

Earlier this month, the Ackers took part in Pipestone’s Civil War Days celebration. They again donned garb appropriate to the era, patiently answered questions posed to them by festival-goers and otherwise lived their lives as people did 145 years or so ago. Yet, they slipped out of character ever so slightly to do something together as a modern-day couple: they renewed their wedding vows.
