Michael Stean Vos, Jr., 18, of Holland has been charged with vehicular homicide, and two counts of DWI in Minnehaha County for a crash in Sioux Falls on May 24, which resulted in the death of his passenger Zachary L. Blawat, 16, of Pipestone.

Blawat died two days later on May 26 at Sanford Medical Center in Sioux Falls due to injuries sustained during the crash.

According to the a copy of the charges by the Minnehaha Grand Jury, Vos is charged with driving a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, without intent to effect death, but in a negligent manner, which resulted in the death of another human being.

The two DWI charges stem from the fact that Vos was under the influence of alcohol and had a blood alcohol level above .08. Witnesses testifying to the grand jury were Sgt. S. Swenson and South Dakota State Trooper A. Steen.

No court date has been set at this time.

The initial report of the crash stated that Vos was driving a 1994 Ford Probe south on I-29 when he lost control of the vehicle and entered the median. Once the vehicle entered the median it rolled end over end several times. Both Vos and Blawat were ejected from the vehicle.

Several witnesses reported to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety that prior to the crash, the vehicle was driving well over the posted speed limit.

According to the Sioux Falls Police Department the first report of the crash came in at 5:26 p.m. and a portion of the interstate was temporarily closed due to the accident.
