Quartziter Days start Friday

Although you won’t see any goats racing down Main Street Jasper this year, that doesn’t mean there isn’t going to be a celebration: Quartziter Days activities are this weekend, Aug. 7-9.

Events kick off Friday evening, Aug. 7 with a big Whopper Feed at the City Park from 5-7 p.m. The event is a fundraiser for the Jasper Blowhards, who will also be presenting a concert at 7 p.m.

The Great Plains Tractor Pull makes a return visit to Jasper beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Athletic Fields. These pullers come from Minnesota, Iowa and South Dakota and feature a couple of local pullers as well.

Saturday, Aug. 8 events begin at 8 a.m. with a 5K Walk/Run. Registration is at the lower level of the Memorial Hall. Also from 8-10 a.m. there will be quarry tours. Meet on the west side of the Jasper Historical Museum.

Registration for the Kids’ Power Pedal Pull begins at 8:30 on the south side of the Park. The Pedal Pull begins at 9:30 a.m.

This year there has been a change in the start time for the parade.

Parade Lineup will begin at 10 a.m. on Roberts Ave. Lineup for the Kiddie Parade begins at 10:30 a.m. on the corner of Spicer Ave. and Wall St. The parade will have a “Cartoon Theme” and begin at 10:45 a.m.

The Quartziter Day parade begins at 11 a.m. and proceeds from Roberts Ave., down Wall St. and then turns north at Sherman Ave. (Museum corner).

A Mud Volleyball tournament has been slated this year and starts at noon at the Athletic Fields.

Afternoon activities will be in the City Park and will include Lighter Side Clown & Face Painting from 1-2 p.m., a Bruce Dysthe performance from 2-3 p.m. and Kids Inflatables in the Park from 1-4 p.m.

Armbands can be purchased before Saturday for $3, or the day of for $5.

Various other kids games will be available, a dunk tank, fire truck rides, health fair booth by Jasper Community Ambulance, Red Cross Blood Mobile Booth, refreshment booth by Boy Scouts and SnoCones by Jasper Quarry Lions.

Saturday evening from 5-7 p.m. the Jasper Historical Society will sponsor a supper at Memorial Hall, with ice cream sundaes by Progress Study Club.

The Larry Olson Band will play from 6-10 p.m. at Memorial Hall. Tickets are $5 per person. There will be CSI Karaoke on Wall Street from 8:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. sponsored by Sanow’s Pub.

Sunday events feature a breakfast by the Jasper Community Ambulance Association from 9 a.m. to noon at Memorial Hall. An ecumenical church service at City Park will be held at 10 a.m. Those attending are encouraged to bring their lawn chairs.
