The dinner: Pipestone American Legion Post 6 will serve a free dinner to all veterans, their spouses and Auxiliary members on Veteran’s Day, Nov. 11 from 5 - 7 p.m. The dinner is also open to all who would like to show their support for the veterans at a cost of $12. The meal, which will be catered by the Glass House in Ihlen, will consist of roast beef or ham, mashed potatoes and gravy, green bean casserole, a dinner roll, an ice cream cup and coffee or juice. First come, first serve, with food for about 300 people.
The show: After dinner, at 8 p.m. at the Pipestone Performing Arts Center, The Great Pretenders will entertain the crowd with their signature Country, Gospel and Fifties music, with comedy sprinkled throughout the show.
This show is co-sponsored by the American Legion, VFW, and the Performing Arts Center, and is a specific fundraiser for the Avenue of Flags. Reserve tickets for $10 can be purchased by calling the new Box Office at the Pipestone County Museum at 825-2020 or 877-722-2787. Tickets are also available at the door.
All proceeds from the meal and the show will be used to fund the continuation of the Avenue of Flags, which was started to honor deceased veterans. Each flag in the Avenue of flags is a casket flag that has been given to the American Legion by the deceased veteran’s family. On the border of each flag is stenciled the name of the deceased veteran the flag represents.
This year the Legion added 34 flag holders along Hwy. 23 and Hwy. 30 and plans are in the works to install flags on South Hiawatha from Main Street to the Court House.
