R-T-R girls throttle T-M-B, edged by Adrian

Stout defense combined with well-balanced scoring turned out to be a winning recipe for the Russell-Tyler-Ruthton girls’ basketball team Thursday evening as the Knights beat the visiting Tracy-Milroy-Balaton Panthers, 67-43, to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
Using a tenacious full-court press most of the contest, the Knights limited the Panthers to a mere 19 points in the first half and allowed T-M-B to notch just 24 markers in the second period in earning the Camden Conference victory.
“We did a nice job of recognizing when we could trap,” Russell-Tyler-Ruthton head coach Darin Dahle said following the tilt. “We still have to do a better job of rotating away from the ball where our player went to trap, but overall, we did a pretty nice job.”
Offensively, the Knights had three players reach double-figure scoring totals and two more that finished the night with nine points. The well-balanced scoring effort made it difficult for T-M-B to focus on stopping one or two players, and with the likes of RTR senior guard Casey Thooft (nine points, nine assists, five steals) dishing out assists like meals in a crowded diner, the Panthers were left scratching their heads.
“I think we probably could have shot more from the outside, but when we try to drill it into the post, the posts (players) do a really good job; as long as we’re there to rebound, things are looking good,” R-T-R senior forward Jenny Kenneke said. “I thought we were pretty patient offensively and didn’t take too many bad shots.”
Kenneke (10 points, four steals) opened the scoring with a medium-range jumper, and senior forward Kristin Fritz followed with a short pull up of her own to give the Knights an early 4-0 advantage and to prompt T-M-B head coach Ryan Kruse to signal for a quick timeout.
Out of the break, the Panthers stumbled in the offensive zone, and an alert Thooft quickly moved the ball up court and found a blazing Jade Possail heading to the hoop. Thooft’s pass was on the mark and Possail was fouled as she knocked down the layup. The senior guard was on target with the ensuing free throw to complete the 3-point play, and the Knights enjoyed an early 7-0 lead.
However, the Panthers showed signs of life as Anna Snyder muscled up a shot, and M’Hesi Haugen (seven points) and Alyssa Becker hit back-to-back buckets – one of only two times T-M-B would score on consecutive offensive possessions in the game. The quick six by T-M-B pulled the club closer at 9-6, but the 3-point deficit was the smallest Panther gap of the evening as the Knights slowly started inching away with 11 minutes and 23 seconds remaining in the first half.
The Panthers tried to tighten their defense, but the Knights were crafty in working the ball to the open player inside and out, forcing T-M-B to commit several fouls. R-T-R, which hit 15-of-22 free throws on the night, took advantage of its trips to the charity stripe and created a 10-point cushion (22-12) four minutes before intermission.
The Knights’ Lindsey Willert (team-high 12 points, six rebounds) and Chelbi Welvaert received nice passes from Brittni Peterson (five points, one block) and Thooft, respectively, to push their advantage to 14 points with two minutes remaining. T-M-B countered with a free throw from Becker and a jumper by Kate Johnson (14 points), but Thooft answered right back with the first of two treys, and the Knights made their way to the locker room with a 30-19 advantage.
“I liked the aggressiveness we showed in the offensive zone,” Dahle said. “We created a lot of two and three-foot opportunities with good dribble-drive penetration. I wish we had made more of those short shots. Our shooting percentage couldn’t have been that great, but we had a lot of offensive rebounds and second and third chances.”
It was much of the same in the second half, and the Knights forged a 20-point cushion six minutes, 35 seconds into the final period. R-T-R senior post Jada Minett (10 points, four rebounds) was the recipient of a nice feed from Fritz and followed with a putback bucket. Possail, too, found the range from the right wing on two occasions, while Thooft hit her second 3-pointer of the contest to give the Knights a 49-29 lead.
Despite Johnson posting 10 second-half points, the Panthers were simply overpowered by the Knights.
With his starters creating a sizeable advantage, Coach Dahle had the luxury of being able to go to his bench. The R-T-R offense didn’t miss a beat with Amanda Staeffler, Erika Weets and Sam Schaefer in the game, as each scored in the later stages of the second half and maintained the staunch defensive front.
“We needed to get these first two games, I thought, and get off to a good start in the conference,” Dahle said. “We have a tough road coming up with Adrian on Saturday and Minneota on Tuesday. Then we host MACCRAY, and it’s going to be a tough stretch of games for us, right here, so we needed to get these first two. We played pretty well, overall.”

B-squad
R-T-R 51, T-M-B 26
The Knights’ B-squad put forth a similar effort to that of the varsity Thursday in the first tilt of the evening, using a tight defense and a quick-tempo offense to ease past the visitors.
Sophomore Kendra Erickson was strong down low for the Knights and finished with a game-high 19 points. Jenae Minett followed with 10 points, while Kristen Knudsen and Allison Porchardt posted five points apiece.
Sam Schaefer, Wendy Andersen and Kelsey Stanek each scored four points for the Knights.

Adrian 58, R-T-R 50
Following its 2-0 start, the Knights squared off against defending Section 3A champion Adrian Saturday evening in Adrian.
Despite Brittni Peterson’s 10 points and six rebounds, the Knights(2-1) dropped a 58-50 decision for their first loss of the year.
Casey Thooft was an all-around performer on the night, scoring seven points to go along with eight rebounds, seven assists, three steals and one block.
Jade Possail had nine points on the night for R-T-R, and Chelbi Welvaert finished with eight points. Kristin Fritz and Jada Minett posted seven apiece, while Jenny Kenneke and Lindsey Willert had four and two points, respectively.
