With a large crowd on hand to support the Arrows and see Jasper High School wrestler John Facile inducted into the Pipestone Area Wrestling Hall of Fame Tuesday evening, a depleted Pipestone Area wrestling team didn’t fail to keep attendees entertained.
Not only did the Arrows defeat the visiting Worthington Trojans, 42-32, but also the team saw one of its own, junior Jadon Evans, earn his 100th career victory – pinning Trojan 140-pounder Blake Schroeder in two minutes, 38 seconds.
“It was parents night and there was a lot of excitement,” Evans said following the dual. “I was a little nervous, I guess; it’s been my goal since the seventh grade, and I wanted to get it just like my brother.”
With his victory, Evans and his brother Jesse Evans made Pipestone Area history, as they are the only siblings to reach the 100-win milestone.
“They’re the first two to do it here,” Pipestone Area head coach Brian Bos said. “I think since I’ve been here, everyone who has reached that mark has done it by pin or technical fall, and that’s our third 100th victory against Worthington.
“I asked Jesse if he was going to be here tonight, and he said he was coming. I know it meant a lot to Jesse to come up here and see Jadon reach 100 wins. They’ve been a good group of boys for me, and I just love all these kids. Words can’t express what I feel for these kids. Win or lose, you love them all, and I’m very proud of all of them.”
The evening started off in grand style, as the PAS junior varsity squeaked out a 32-28 victory to remain undefeated on the year.
Between the JV and varsity duals, Facile, who is first all-time in Jasper wrestling history in wins, team points, falls/technical falls and takedowns was honored by the Arrows and presented an induction plaque by his high school coach Lyle Gillen.
From there, things only got livelier.
Facing the Trojans without four starters, a dual that would have easily gone the Arrows way was now a tight affair.
The Trojans struck first, as WHS 103-pounder Christian Artiga earned a 10-2 major decision over the Arrows’ Elijah Everson to give the Trojans a quick 4-0 lead.
Pipestone Area senior John Bush didn’t have to do much to win at 112 pounds, as the Trojans forfeited that weight class – giving the Arrows a 6-4 advantage.
At 119 pounds, Trojan Jared Kinley quickly pulled those points back for Worthington with a pinfall victory over PAS’ Walker Kor one minute, 20 seconds into the second period, but Arrow 125-pounder Brady Bos turned the tables on Worthington’s Junior Nguyen and put the Arrows back in front (12-10) with a third-period pinfall victory.
“It was a difficult dual because they (Worthington) did absolutely nothing; they locked up on our head and didn’t do anything – very frustrating,” Coach Bos said. “It wasn’t wrestling, and it’s no fun for the fans that way, either. Well, we got the ‘W’, and we’ll be the wiser when we face them at the Luverne tournament Saturday.”
The Trojans claimed victories in the next two tilts, as Trojan 130-pounder Kyle Wiese earned a fall against Cole Nordmeyer at 2:55 and WHS 135-pounder Joey Kinley defeated the Arrows’ Allan Hachmann by a score of 12-0. While Hachmann, an eighth-grader, was not expected to beat the junior, he didn’t get pinned and kept the Trojans from earning two valuable points.
“Coach Bos told me to stay off by back, and I went out there retying not to get pinned or lose by tech fall,” Hachmann said. “I knew he was going to be tough, so I just had to go out there and wrestle my best.”
The moral victory brought the partisan crowd to its feet, and they only had more to cheer about as the dual progressed.
Trailing 20-12, the Arrows needed to start putting some points on the scoreboard, and Jadon Evans didn’t disappoint.
“I knew I needed to go out there and get a pin, so I just went out there and got the job done,” Evans said. “I flipped him with a head hook and finished him off.
“It was great to have all of my cousins and my brother here to support me and the team. My classmates and the other fans were great. My next goal is to get to state.”
With six points for the pinfall victory, the Arrows now trailed by a scant two points (20-18) with seven tilts to go.
Arrow senior Aaron Walters, filling in for teammate Nathan Dubblede, struggled against Trojan 145-pounder Aaron Pavelko and bowed out by pinfall at 1:45. Dustin Hachmann didn’t let the Trojans take two in a row and won a thrilling 1-0 match against Dayton Williamson at 152 pounds, pulling the Arrows back to within five points (26-21).
Matt Haraldson, also filling in on the varsity, moved the Arrows closer with a 12-8 victory over WHS’ Zach Kempema at 160-pounds, and PAS 171-pounder Dylan Kor put the Arrows in the lead, 30-26, with a fall against Mike Hillesheim.
Tyler Evans made it two straight falls for the Arrows, pinning Brandon Riemersma 1:19 into the second period.
With two bouts to go, the Arrows held a slim 10-point advantage. The 215-pound and heavyweight bouts would decide the dual, and Pipestone Area was without its undefeated 215-pounder Jon Gorter.
With a lot of weight on his shoulders, PAS junior Mark Dunn squared off against the Trojans’ Jesus Wheeler. Dunn scored twice with takedowns, and with the second flipped Wheeler on his back. Just 29 seconds into the second period, Dunn scored the winning pinfall.
“I was really pumped going out there, and knew I just had to stay off my back,” Dunn said. “I didn’t think I’d pin him in the second period; I thought I was going to have to work harder to get that ‘W’. Everybody stepped up tonight, and it was a great win for us.”
Coach Bos was thrilled with Dunn’s victory as well.
“Mark is taking advantage of his situation; with Jon out, Mark has picked up a couple of varsity wins by pin, and I’m very proud of him,” he said. “I’m glad he stuck with it and went out and did a nice job. It was wonderful, and I know he’s happy.”
With the dual victory secured, the heavyweight tilt had little meaning to the final result, but the crowd wanted to see another Arrow pin. Unfortunately for PAS senior Cody Schulze, it wasn’t to be, as Jordan Bents got the better of him at 1:16 of their bout – bringing the final score to 42-32.
Junior Varsity
In JV action against the Trojans Tuesday night, the Arrows won 7-of-13 matches and claimed a 32-28 victory to remain undefeated on the year.
Alex Ossefoort started off the dual for the Arrows and knocked off Jacob Clarke by a score of 10-3.
Ben Taracena got the better of PAS’ Jaydon Gorter in the next tilt, pinning the Arrows grappler at 3:08 of their match to give the Trojans a 6-3 lead.
Anthony Luft and Carson Hagen followed suitrecording a technical fall and 2-0 victory over the Arrows’ Jake Haubrich and Broderick Everson, respectively.
Trailing 13-3, the Arrows looked to climb back into the dual, and Ryan Mitchell provided some spark. Ryan earned four points for the Arrows with a 13-2 major decision over Trojan Alex Hayenga. PAS teammate Jared Schiebout made it an even pair for the Arrows with a 17-10 victory over Joe Pavelko, and the hosts were right back in it, trailing 13-10.
WHS’ Danny Rodriguez and jonathon Murillo extended the slim lead with victories over Will Smith and Cole Staples, but Josh Stangeland earned a pinfall victory over Michael Garcia to keep the dual close (22-16).
Francisco Zavala did his best to put Worthingotn on top for good, pinning Arrow Jared Nygaard at 1:17 of their tilt, but PAS claimed victories in the final three bouts to complet the comeback.
Jared Hillard won a 13-3 decision over Adrian Soto, while Ossefoort and Gorter earned pinfall victories over Zavala and Emmanuel Martinez, respectively.
Tri Valley Tournament
Despite having six starters out of the lineup for various reasons, the Arrows finished a respectable sixth at Saturday’s Tri Valley Wrestling Tournament in Crooks, S.D.
Even without a heavyweight and a 145-pounder, the Arrows totaled 119 points on the day. Had those positions been filled and the others starters thrown in the mix, Pipestone Area most likely would have eclipsed the 152.5 points scored by winner Garretson. Kimball-White Lake (147) and Dell Rapids (137.5) finished second and third, respectively, while host Tri Valley (132) and Flandreau (126) placed fourth and fifth.
Although the Arrows weren’t able to capture the team title, several grapplers had solid tournaments in their respective weight classes, including a trio of runner-up finishes, two third-place awards and a fourth-place finish.
PAS seniors John Bush and Dustin Hachmann and eighth-grader Brady Bos each earned runner-up honors in their divisions, while juniors Jadon Evans and Dylan Kor claimed bronze. Junior Tyler Evans was fourth in the 189-pound bracket.
Bush, who has dropped down to the 112-pound division after wrestling at 119 and 125-pounds, received a first-round bye and squared off against Sioux Valley’s Eli Westendorf in the second round. Bush earned an easy pinfall victory in one minute, 17 seconds to advance in the bracket.
In the third round, Bush faced Kimball-White Lake’s Korbin Bely, who also won his second-round tilt by fall. Bush controlled the match from the beginning and earned a 10-3 decision to secure a berth in the finals. There, Bush struggled to earn points against Flandreau’s Cody Reed and was shut out, 4-0, placing him second on the day.
Bos had a similar trip to the finals in the 119-pound division. After a first-round bye, Bos took on Dell Rapids’ Taren Xavier and earned a hard-fought 3-0 victory. In the semifinals, Bos had an easier time of it, pinning K-WL’s Aaron Soulek in the second period (3:18) to earn a place in the finals against Mount Vernon-Plankinton/Ethan’s Miles Moody. Bos managed to earn two points against the MV-P/E sophomore, but eventually bowed out, 10-2, to place second.
Hachmann also received a first-round bye to begin his march toward the finals in the 152-pound bracket. His first match was about as quick as they come, as Hachmann put Marion-Freeman’s Jacob Smith on his back in a mere eight seconds. In the semifinals, however, Hachmann had a tougher bout. Against MV-P/E’s Kyle Gerlach, Hachmann had to go the distance before securing a finals berth with a 9-5 victory. The finals proved to be a real battle, and Hachmann’s two points weren’t enough to get past Dell Rapids’ Jordan Munk, who claimed the top position on the podium with a 5-2 win.
Jadon Evans knocked off K-WL’s Turner Blasius by pinfall (1:22) to open his tournament, but was edged by Flandreau’s Kyle Scofield, 7-5, in the semifinals and dropped into the consolation bracket. There, Evans defeated DR’s Jackson Entringer, 5-2, to advance to the third-place tilt against M-F’s Slade Mutchkelnaus. Evans had the upper hand from the get go and cruised to an easy 12-5 victory for third place.
Dylan Kor, the Arrows’ stalwart 171-pounder, quickly ripped through his first two bouts, pinning SV’s Reuben Krueger (1:00) and Elk Park/Jefferson’s Colton McCreary (46 seconds), respectively. K-WL’s Evan Soulek ended Kor’s march to the finals, though, turning the tables on the lanky junior with a late pinfall (5:07).
Kor was forced to wrestle twice more to earn third place, pinning M-F’s Bryce Sayler (35 seconds) and Flandreau’s Trevor Dietrich (2:20).
Tyler Evans had to do most of his work in the consolation bracket, as he was pinned in the second round by Garretson’s Ethan Storment after winning his opener against Flandreau’s Sheldon Johnson by major decision, 15-5.
Evans bounced back against Parker’s Lee Berens, earning a 10-6 win to advance to the quarterfinals against Chester Area’s Brandon Fedeler. Evans earned a late first-period fall (1:54) against the junior to earn another meeting with Storment for third place. Evans gave the Garretson senior a better battle in the third-place tilt, but eventually bowed out by a score of 9-6 to finish fourth.
Arrow eighth-grader Elijah Everson shut out SV’s Hayden Hall, 5-0, to open his tournament in the 103-pound class. Eventual fourth-place finisher Jace Christensen of Flandreau took Everson to task, though, in the second round, winning an 11-2 major decision.
In the consolation bracket, Everson pinned Tri Valley’s R.J. VanDenBerg in a mere 17 seconds, but offered little resistance against K-WL’s Dylan Konechne, managing a lone point in an 18-1 defeat to finish his tournament at 2-2.
Wrestling up a weight class, Walker Kor also finished 2-2 on the day in the 125-pound division. After a first-round bye, Kor fell to eventual fourth-place finisher Phillip Schwebach of Dell Rapids by pinfall (1:22) to drop into the consolation bracket. Kor made a solid run at third place, though, beating K-WL’s Nick Fey, 9-0, and pinning TV’s Riley Page in 55 seconds. Kor’s run ended there, however, as the PAS eighth-grader was knocked off by MV-P/E’s Brian Vermeulen by pinfall (3:17).
Matt Haraldson, filling in for Brandan Alfson at 160 pounds, opened the day with a 13-2 major decision over MV-P/E’s Shay Johnson. Marion-Freeman’s Taylor Koehn turned the tables on Haraldson in the quarterfinals, beating the PAS sophomore, 14-5. In the consolation bracket, Haraldson dropped a 7-1 decision to Garretson’s Jess Kruid to finish his tournament at 1-2.
Arrow 215-pounder Mark Dunn, a substitute for the undefeated Jon Gorter, also went 1-2 on the day. Dunn fell to M-F’s Jesse Kunkel by pinfall (1:11) in his opener, but bounced back with a fall of his own against Parker’s Payton Jensen in just 39 seconds. Dunn wasn’t able to advance to the third-place tilt, however, as Riley Boadwine of Tri Valley ended his run with a 7-1 victory.
Arrow freshman Cole Nordmeyer had his hands full in the 130-pound division. Nordmeyer fell to M-F’s Steven Schoenwald by fall (1:45) in his opener and dropped into the consolation bracket. There, Nordmeyer didn’t fare much better, ending his tournament with a pinfall loss to Wessington Springs-Woonsocket’s Dylan Ochsner at 2:02 of their match.
PAS eighth-grader Allan Hachmann also finished the day 0-2. Hachmann was sent to the consolation bracket with a first-round pinfall loss to TV’s Caleb Heiberger. Like Nordmeyer, Hachmann made an early exit at the tournament, as he fell to WSW’s Blake Willman by pinfall.
The Arrows’ next action will be at the Luverne Tournament on Saturday.
