Alger Smith


Alger Smith, 74, Pipestone, died Wednesday, July 19, 2017 at the Pipestone County Medical Center in Pipestone.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 25 at the Pipestone Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Timothy Ouwinga officiating.

Honorary casket bearers were Brianna Rieck and Hailey Snyder.

Casketbearers were Arvin Pater, Dave Krusemark, Mike Cooper, Braeden Rieck, Merle Jasper, Greg Klein and Gary Smith.

Military honors were provided by Michael Boock American Legion Post #6 and VFW Post #3814, Pipestone.

Interment was in New Woodlawn Cemetery in Pipestone.

Alger Henry Smith was born to Albert “Al” and Elsie (Tubergen) Smith on August 12, 1942 in Pipestone. He was baptized and made his profession of faith at the Holland Christian Reformed Church in Holland. He was raised in rural Verdi and attended grade school at Holland Christian School. He graduated from Verdi High School in 1960. He then joined the South Dakota National Guard where he served for six years, based out of Flandreau, S.D.

On Sept 23, 1966 he married Marilyn Spronk at the First Christian Reformed Church in Edgerton. Following their marriage they lived in Sioux Falls, S.D. where he was employed at Warren Supply. In 1969, they moved to Pipestone. Over the years he worked a variety of jobs including Stoeber Marine, Bayliner, CHS and was a John Deere mechanic for over 20 years.

Upon returning from a two week “bucket list” trip through the western U.S., he fell ill and was taken by ambulance to the Pipestone County Medical Center where he died.

He was a member of the Christian Reformed Church in Pipestone where he served as a deacon and on the building committee.

He is survived by his wife, Marilyn Smith, Pipestone; three children, Tamara (Chris) Tureson, Maple Grove, Torre Smith, St. Paul and Alissa (John Arneson) Smith, Overland Park, Kans.; three grandchildren; two siblings, Nancy Johnson, Lake Benton and Gary (Evie) Smith, Paynesville; his father-in-law, Henry W. Spronk, Edgerton; in-laws, Glenda and Norm Van Dyke, Edgerton, Bill and Carol Spronk, Sioux Falls and Dave Spronk, Denver, Colo.

He was preceded in death by one son, Jason Smith; his parents, Al and Elsie Smith; his mother-in-law, Henrietta Spronk and one brother-in-law, Steve Johnson.
