The Pipestone Area boys’ golf team might just have turned a corner.
After struggling with their collective mindset through the early portion of the campaign, the Arrows carded a third-best 329 at the last of three Big South Conference (west division) events of the season Monday evening at the Marshall Country Club in Marshall.
The Luverne Cardinals topped the field of six teams with a team low of 303, while the hosting Tigers scored 311 to finish as the runners-up. Worthington (334), Windom (335) and Redwood Valley (349) rounded out the team standings in Marshall.
Pipestone Area senior Braxton Thompson made great strides against the top competitors he’ll face at the upcoming Section 3AA tournament, carding a team low of 76 that placed him fourth overall in the field of 35 golfers. Starting his 18-hole round on No. 10 Thompson had just one birdie on the back nine and was four-over at the turn. Thompson sank a birdie on No. 2 and followed with birdies on Nos. 7 and 8 to end his round on a positive note – finishing the front nine even.
Matt DeBates and Max Taubert followed Thompson with respective rounds of 82 and 83. DeBates shot the same on both sides and had his lone birdie on (par-4) No. 13, while Taubert shot better on the back nine – carding his lone birdie on No. 14.
Breylon Kuiper came in at 88 for the Arrows, shooting 43 on the back and 45 on the front, and Will DeBates and Jackson Morgan wrapped up the Arrows’ team tally with a round of 92 apiece.
In girls’ action from Redwood Falls at the third BSC event of the season PAS freshman Vivian Brockberg carded a round of 103 to place her in a tie for 18th place in the 28-golfer field.
The Arrows will be back in action Monday in Morton when they tee off at the Big South Conference championships at Dakota Ridge Golf Club.
CARDINAL INVITATIONAL BOYS
The Pipestone Area boys placed ninth out of 13 teams at Saturday’s 18-hole Cardinal Invitational at Interlaken Golf Course in Fairmont.
The Arrows totaled 363 strokes on the day in beating North Union (363), New Ulm (368), Redwood Valley (373) and Windom (no total).
Minnewaska Area won the team event with 314 strokes, while Luverne and Marshall rounded out the top three with totals of 316 and 327.
Braxton Thompson paced the Arrows with a team low 87, placing him in a tie for 29th out of 74 participants. Matt DeBates carded a round of 90 in tying for 39th, while Breylon Kuiper and Max Taubert tied for 45th overall at 93 apiece. Will DeBates and Jackson Morgan rounded out the Arrows with scores of 103 apiece – placing them in a tie for 60th.
CARDINAL INVITATIONAL GIRLS
PAS freshman Vivian Brockberg carded a round of 98 to tie for 22nd place at the Rose Lake Golf Course Saturday in Fairmont.
