Betty Arlene Schara


Betty Arlene Schara, 65, Hutchinson, died Thursday, August 23. 2018 at Edenbrook in Edina, after a long battle with pancreatic cancer.

Funeral services were held  Thursday, Aug. 30 at 11 a.m. at Vineyard United Methodist Church in Hutchinson.

Interment was in Oakland Cemetery, Hutchinson.

Betty Arlene Schara was born on January 12, 1953, in Pipestone, Minnesota. She was the daughter of Melvin Maranell and Grace (Baker) Maranell. Betty was baptized as an infant and was later confirmed at Peace United Methodist Church in Pipestone. She received her education in Pipestone, and was a graduate of the Pipestone High School Class of 1971.

On April 26, 1974, Betty was united in marriage to Gregory Charles DeWitte at Bethlehem United Methodist Church in Hutchinson, Minnesota. This marriage was blessed with two children, Cory Charles DeWitte and Mandi Marie DeWitte. Betty and Gregory were later divorced. Betty married Robert Charles Schara on May 28, 2013 at their home in Hutchinson. Betty and Robert resided in Hutchinson. Robert passed away on July 2, 2014.

Betty was employed as a bookkeeper at the Hutchinson Hospital and also a waitress at the Country Club. She retired in 2017. Betty was a member of Vineyard United Methodist Church.

Betty enjoyed sewing, crocheting, fishing and watching baseball. Betty loved to laugh and bake. She also enjoyed spending time with her toy poodle, Tessa Mae. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family, grandchildren and friends.

She is survived by her son, Cory DeWitte and his wife, Jamie (Haugen) of Montrose, Minn.; grandchildren, Marcus and Finnegan DeWitte; daughter, Mandi DeWitte, of Saint Louis Park, Minn.; siblings, Jean Moeller of Pipestone, Minn., Kenneth Maranell of Corydon, Ind., Patricia Lee and her husband, Doug of Hutchinson, Minn., Becky Walradth and her husband, Sayles of Shakopee, Minn., Daniel Maranell of Buffalo, Minn., many nieces, nephews and friends.

Betty is preceded in death by her husband, Robert Schara; parents, Melvin and Grace Maranell; sister, Donnette Kortlever; brother-In-law, Gordon Moeller and nephew, Kevin Kortlever.
