Flags should fly in Jasper

TO THE EDITOR:

Jasper American Legion – Thank you for putting the flags on main in honor of Flag Day, June 14. It was greatly appreciated by many.

However, shortly after Memorial Day I overheard my husband talking to the Commander of the local American Legion. They were discussing why the flags were not displayed that day. He was told that it was an agreed decision made by “a select few” to not display them because the flags were new and inclement weather was forecast. How appropriate? As a woman who is married to a vet and had two (2) sons, a daughter-in-law and a granddaughter that served in the Armed Forces I think that the Jasper American Legion was very disrespectful to those who have served and are serving for our freedom. We can’t comprehend the number of military who gave their all or is hurting or suffering for us. Did they quit fighting for our freedom because of inclement weather or didn’t want to get wet? I think not. I am very proud to be an American, however, I am not so proud of the Jasper American Legion.
