Hazel C. Schroyer


Hazel C. Schroyer, 89, Pipestone, died Saturday, October 14, 2017.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, October 18 at  10 a.m. at First Lutheran Church in Pipestone.

Interment will be at Old Woodlawn Cemetery.

Memorials may be directed to the Pipestone County Hospice House.

Hazel Carol Schroyer was born on May 21, 1928 to Christian and Helen (Holm) Jensen in Britton, S.D. She grew up in Roslyn, S.D., graduating high school in 1945. She then furthered her education at Augustana College in Sioux Falls, S.D.

On June 8, 1951 she married Mark Schroyer at Lake Shetek Bible Camp near Slayton. The couple then made their home in Pipestone. Along with raising their children, Hazel worked as a church secretary and as county recorder at the Pipestone County Courthouse. She also worked as an elementary teacher, librarian at Brown Elementary School, secretary at Pipestone High School and secretary for Bill Burkholder, Business Manager of the Pipestone High School.

In August 2002, Hazel and Mark moved to Ridge View Estates in Pipestone.

Mark passed away on Nov. 10, 2008.

Hazel entered the Pipestone County Hospice House on Oct. 2, 2017.

She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Pipestone, where she had belonged to Circle and served in the past as a Sunday school teacher. She received her baptism  in the Lutheran faith on June 24, 1928 in Roslyn. In her early life, Hazel gave of her time as a 4-H leader.

She is survived by her six children, Samuel Mark (Patsy) Schroyer, San Francisco, Calif., Gail (Jim) Spencer, Hollywood, Calif., Cheryl (Dale) Johnson, Lake Benton, Kae (Bob) Honeman, Erhard,  Minn., Richard “Chuck” (Deb) Schroyer, Pipestone and Lori (Torito) Schroyer, Seattle, Wash.; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and one sibling, Richard (Ellen) Jensen, Naperville, Ill.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Mark; grandson, Nathan Johnson; parents and a sister, Esther Nelson.
