Holland News for the Week of November 3

A 90th birthday party for Irene Weatherly was held in her honor

A 90th birthday party for Irene Weatherly was held in her honor at the home of her son, Robert “Bob” and Jo in Fergus Falls recently. Irene was born and grew up on a farm east of Holland. She married Floyd Weatherly and they spent many years in the Holland and Pipestone area. Their three children, Carol, Bob and Marilyn all graduated from Pipestone High School. Those in attendance were her children, Carol and Joe Goettsch of Blaine, Marilyn and Rod Luedtke of Fort Wayne, Ind., along with Bob and Jo. Siblings bringing her birthday wishes were Bud and Sylvia Hardies of Holland, Floyd and Mavis Fritz of Sioux Falls and Norma Schoenefeld of Clear Lake, S.D. Grandson Doug Weatherly and boys, Joseph and Adam of Dilworth, and nieces, Rhonda Trees of Forest City, Iowa; Lynn Mauland of Cottonwood; Jim and Margaret Wosji of Sioux Falls were also present for the happy occasion. Irene was very happy with the cards received from friends in the Holland and Pipestone area and from the children of the late Ed and Clara Weatherly. She appreciated her family sharing the day with her on Oct. 28.

Ten tables of pinochle players along with two tables of alternate games of players enjoyed the afternoon on Tuesday at the Edgerton Senior Center. Harold DeKam played a mean game of pinochle as he ended up with a high score of 7190. Armabelle Stoel was runnerup with 6690. Door prize went to Ethel Ten Hove and Rena Masselink was drawn for the alternate game. Being it was such a nice day Merle Fenicle who is 95 drove by himself from Falls Landing to Edgerton and Donna gave him recognition. Thanks Edgerton for a nice afternoon. The next county card party will be hosted by the Woodstock Seniors at the Pipestone Senior Center on Tuesday, Nov. 25 at 1:30 p.m. sharp.

Thursday was a nice fall day for Don and Betty Moffitt to accompany their son, Ron, of Granada to Alexandria to spend time with Clet Taubert and they all had a great time visiting. Clet wanted to greet all his friends at Holland as he does miss them.

Surprising me (Rosie) was my son, Mike, Apple Valley, who came Thursday night, having to take care of business in the area. Going out for lunch Friday noon were Mary Ann DeGroot and son, Jesse, of Pipestone, Lois Haarsma, Mike and myself. We had a nice time of fellowship while enjoying our meal. Larrie DeGroot stopped in the afternoon so, he also got to visit with Mike before he left for home.

Thursday evening John and Nellie Schoonhoven, Dorothy Roemeling and myself were among the folks at the open house for the newly built Pipestone County Emergency Services offices. It seemed like a huge building to me, but nice.

Enjoying lunch out on Friday were sisters-in-law, Cornie Zeinstra, Carol Zeinstra, Pearl Pritchett and Marie Zeinstra. Joining them was a cousin, Wilma Friese of Luverne. After lunch Wilma and Cornie stopped at the home of Freddie and Henrietta Vander Wal and they had a great time reminiscing and laughing about when they were younger.

Darlene Winsel served the goodies to go with coffee Friday morning at the center. Her husband, Bud, was celebrating his birthday that day so he was serenaded by the folks there with Marie Zeinstra playing the ivories. It is so nice to have someone with talent in our midst.

Saturday morning we had some new but familiar faces at the center for coffee. They were Mavis Erickson of Franklin, her son Kim of Sherburn and daughter LuAnn Heidebrink of Dell Rapids, Jan and Jim Biever who were renting the house from Mavis have moved to Pipestone so they came for the day.

Spending the weekend at the home of Dorothy Roemeling were Bill and Nancy Pennings of St. Cloud. They were celebrating their wedding anniversary with family members by dining out Saturday evening. Halloween callers Friday night at Dorothy’s home were her great-granddaughters, Lucie and Audrey Burger and their mom, Heidi, from Paris, France. The little girls had a break from school so they spent the long weekend with grandparents, Marlyce and Dave Logan. Halloween is not celebrated in France so this was great treat for Lucie and Audrey.
