Mildred Roberts Stoltenberg


Mildred Roberts Stoltenberg, 96, Elk River, formerly of Pipestone, died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2017.

Funeral services were held Friday, Dec. 29 at Hartquist Funeral Home, Pipestone Chapel.

Interment was in Old Woodlawn Cemetery, Pipestone.

Mildred Roberts Stoltenberg was born to Eilert and Agnes (Ladwig) Ludwigs on Feb. 4, 1921 on a farm near Chatsworth, Iowa. When she was four years old, she moved with her parents to a farm near Craig, Iowa where she was raised and attended school. Upon completion of her education, she worked for area farm families doing their housework and cooking.

On April 18, 1945 she married Donald H. Roberts. Following their marriage they farmed for ten years in Larchwood, Iowa. In 1955, they moved to Pipestone. During this time, Mildred stayed at home. In 1960 she became employed at Feckers Produce in Pipestone. When this business closed, she began doing housework for various people. Then, later she began working as a cook at Ralph’s Tavern in Pipestone. She continued working there for 18 years when she became employed in the deli at Hank’s Foods in Pipestone. A short time later, she began cooking in the kitchen at the Calumet Inn in Pipestone where she worked until her retirement in 1986.

On Oct. 8, 1993, Don preceded her in death. After his death, Mildred continued to live in Pipestone.

On Oct. 28, 1995 she married Clifford Stoltenberg in Pipestone. Following their marriage they lived in Pipestone.

Clifford preceded her in death on Aug. 5, 2005. After his death, Mildred resided in her home until April 27, 2006, when she became a resident of the Storybrook Apartments in Pipestone.

In January 2012 she moved to Elk River to live with her daughter Debbie and her husband Greg where she lived the remainder of her life.

She was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone. She was baptized on Feb. 20, 1921 at Chatsworth, Iowa church and confirmed in 1935 at St. John’s Evangelical Church, Craig, Iowa. She was active in the Women’s General Assembly at St. Paul Lutheran Church and helped with the quilting at the church. While working at the Calumet Inn, she won the chili cook-off contest two years in a row. She was also a member of the Pipestone Hospital Auxiliary.

She is survived by her three children, Dale (Kimlyn “Bambi”) Roberts, Vernon, Conn., Dianne Roberts, Sioux Falls, S.D. and Debbie (Greg) Weigold, Elk River; three grandchildren; and one sister, Aldena Borton and husband Joe Lazlo, Benson, Ariz.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Donald; her husband, Clifford and four brothers, Harvey Ludwigs, Henry Ludwigs and two brothers who died in infancy.
