Patricia “Pat” Johannsen

Patricia “Pat” Johannsen, 85, Pipestone, died Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at Good Samaritan Society in Pipestone.

Funeral services were held Sunday, July 29 at First Presbyterian Church in Pipestone.

Interment was in New Woodlawn Cemetery, Pipestone.

Patricia “Pat” Edith Johannsen was born to Harold and Edith Cook in Pipestone on June 17, 1933. She was a lifelong resident of Pipestone where she graduated in 1951. After graduation she furthered her education at Hastings College in Hastings, Neb., and later at South Dakota State University in Brookings, S.D.

She began working as a telephone operator in Pipestone where she took a call from the man she would later spend 65 wonderful years of marriage with, Bill Johannsen. They were married Jan. 4, 1953 and made their first home in Verdi. Though the couple relocated to several residences in Pipestone over the following years, The Campbell House (or the “castle” as they called it) that was moved to its location at the time from downtown, held a special place in her heart.

Pat’s love for shopping drew her to a career as a sales associate at Bettie’s Tots to Teens and Sears in Pipestone until she and Bill retired in 1991. Together, they spent their retirement living on the Johannsen family farm that had been passed down for over a century.

She was a lifelong member of the First Presbyterian Church in Pipestone where she was baptized, confirmed and married. She was active in her congregation by serving as an elder, deacon, and a fixture of the choir. She was an inaugural member of the Al Opland Singers and her true passion was performing with them.

She is survived by her husband, Bill; children, Nikki (Jon) Edwards, Edina, Bill (Kristi) Johannsen, Hartford, S.D., Skot Johannsen, Minneapolis and Todd (Wanda) Johannsen, Black Hawk, S.D.; six grandchildren; a sister, “Muggs” Bunn, Cedar Rapids, Iowa and one sister-in-law.

She was preceded in death by her parents; infant son; siblings, Bob Cook, Eddie Cook, and Twila Martinson and three siblings-in-law.
