AMATEUR BASEBALL: A’s net forfeit win over Cubs

Worthington could not furnish enough players

The Pipestone A’s will receive a forfeit victory from Sunday’s home game versus the Worthington Cubs.

“No game today due to a lack of Cubs’ players,” was posted on the Worthington Cubs’ Facebook page during Sunday morning. The A’s Facebook followed suit, stating the game had been cancelled.

A’s head coach Avery Ploeger said the two teams attempted to find a make-up date that worked for both sides; however, nothing came to fruition.

The final decision rested with Gopher League and other association officials.

This means the A’s are 6-7 heading into Wednesday’s game at Windom (Island Park).

Pipestone will play two home games during the 36th Annual Water Tower Festival, on Friday, June 26, versus Lakefield (7:30 p.m.) and Luverne Sunday, June 28, at City Field. There’s no admission charge to regular-season games.

On Wednesday, June 18, the Milroy Irish downed Pipestone, 9-2, at City Field.

Collin Moeller smacked his second home run of the season. Mark Abrahamson doubled and scored.

Jackson Melcher, Maddox Biever and Merrick Heidebrink also had one hit each for the A’s, and Luka Quist drew a pair of walks batting in the No. 9 hole.

Mitchell Biever took the loss for Pipestone, throwing 95 pitches in 4-1/3 innings — he allowed five earned runs on five hits while walking four and striking out four. Riley Bosma and Abrahamson also pitched.

Tyler Maeyeart, who was a sophomore on the University of Sioux Falls roster this past season and played scholastically at Marshall High, earned the win for Milroy.

Maeyeart threw 155 pitches, with 91 of them for strikes (58.7 efficiency). He struck out 15, walked five and allowed two earned runs on five hits.

Firechiefs unhinge Snappers

MILBANK, S.D. — The Elkton Snappers went 1-2 last week, capped by Sunday’s 4-2 loss to the Milbank Firechiefs.

Elkton had beaten Milbank earlier this season on June 1, in another close contest.

Dylan Gillespie and Aidan Stewart both went 2-for-4. Stewart doubled for the Snappers’ lone extra-base hit. Dave Bierman and Gillespie both pushed across runs.

Gillespie and Stewart split time on the bump. Gillespie allowed four runs (three earned) on three hits and four walks while recording eight strikeouts. Milbank’s Dom Boerger pitched a complete game with a whopping 20 strikeouts.

Earlier in the week, Castlewood dispatched Elkton, 13-6, and the Snappers clipped Renner, 7-6, last Friday.

Elkton (5-7) will be at home this week, versus Lake Norden Wednesday, June 25 and a Sunday matinee (3 p.m.) against the Clark Traders at Elkton City Field.
