AMATEUR BASEBALL: A’s, Snappers open playoffs

Elkton tunes up with 10-run win over Estelline

The summer amateur baseball season will soon reach its crescendo.

And both the Pipestone A’s and Elkton Snappers participate in postseason tournaments this week.

Pipestone, seeded fifth in the Region 10C Tournament with an 8-10 overall record, will play host to the No. 4 Hadley Buttermakers at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at A’s/City Field for Game One.

Game Two is set for Laurie Mahon Memorial Field in Hadley beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26. If needed, Game Three will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 27.

The A’s and Buttermakers split regular-season games, with each team winning in their own ballpark.

Admission prices are $7 for adults and $4 for students. Children five years of age and younger will not be charged.

South Dakota

Snappers face Traders

The Elkton Snappers (9-10) are the No. 4 seed in the South Dakota Amateur Baseball District 1B Tournament.

They will square off with the fifth-seeded Clark Traders at roughly 7:45 p.m. Saturday, July 26. The Snappers swept the Traders this season, scoring 23 runs in two games.

All games will be conducted at the same site, Memorial Park in Castlewood.

Other first-round games are No. 1 Castlewood versus No. 8 Estelline at noon, the second-seeded Milbank Firechiefs against the No. 7 Ramona Express at about 2:45 p.m. The evening session opens with the No. 3 Lake Norden Lakers versus the No. 6 Volga Cormorants at 5 p.m.

Semifinals and loser’s brackets game will be on Sunday, July 27, beginning at noon.

The consolation championship is set for 7:30 p.m. Monday, July 28, with the third-place game at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 29, and the championship at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, July 30.

Admission prices are $10 for adults and $5 students per day.

Sunday, July 20 Game

Elkton 13, Estelline 3 (7)

Elkton tuned up for the playoffs with its final regular-season game this past Sunday in conjunction with the Harvest Festival at City Park.

The Snappers downed the Estelline Merchants, 13-3, in a seven-inning game. They also had a scrimmage following versus the Renner Rangers which ended in a 5-all tie.

Dave Bierman earned the win, allowing just three runs (two earned) on five hits and three walks in 4-1/3 innings. Bierman struck out three, with 51 strikes in 80 pitches (63.8 efficiency). Logan Kuehl also pitched for the Snappers.

Dylan Kuehl and Dylan Gillespie both produced three RBI. Aidan Stewart went 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Brady Steffen and Gillespie both rapped out two hits. Four players scored twice.
