TO THE EDITOR:
I learned a lesson from my Great Aunt Grace Vander Zee when I was seven years old about being the best Christian possible.
We went on a three week vacation and since my parents were born in the depression era, they found a route where we could stay overnight at relatives 14 of the nights. When we got out of church in Sunnyside, Wash., I asked Aunt Grace if she and Uncle Rian were the two best Christians because I thought that they were. She immediately and emphatically said three times in a row, ‘you never compare yourself to another person, you just do as the Bible says’.
Instead of first hearing the importance of what she said, I heard her attitude and told her that it surprised me that such a nice person would get that aggressive. She was immediately embarrassed and felt bad for being a bad example to a kid, and I was very sorry that I had made an excellent person feel bad and started to pray, what can I say or do to stop such a bad mistake. So, then I told her that she had just taught us how to be the best Christians possible. Because the Bible says that all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God so if we follow others, instead of just following God, we will not be as excellent.
