Bernard Houg, 75, died Wednesday, April 23, 2025.
Bernard Allen Houg was born on July 6, 1949 to Carl L. O. Houg, Jr. and Marcella Houg. He was baptized and confirmed at the Rosedell Trinity Lutheran Church in Jasper, Minn. He attended Jasper High School, graduating in 1967. Bernie was active in choir, marching band, football, track and baseball.
After graduation Bernie enlisted in the National Guard and went on to active Army, serving for 22 plus years. His deployment included such places as Germany, Desert Storm and Korea. He was eventually stationed at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in Colorado Springs, Colo. where he met and fell in love with his beloved Mary, also serving in the army. The two were united in marriage in May 1978. They made a life that included hiking, skiing, fishing and above all, reading. Bernie loved trout fishing and we as a family imagine Mary reading while Bernie wading in the water actively pursuing a fish. Bernie was an avid reader and a quiet gentle soul. He was never one to strike up a conversation but would always listen to any concerns.
Upon retiring from army life Bernie and Mary moved to Mineral, Va., which was Mary’s birthplace. They lived a quiet life filled with their love for each other.
On April 2, 2025 Bernie was involved in a tragic accident that eventually took his life. He passed away peacefully at the University of Virgina Medical Center in Charlottesville, Va. on April 23, 2025. His beloved Mary passed only a month before his death. Their bond was great and we will always be thankful that they shared a blessed life. His absence will be deeply felt by those who loved him.
Bernie is lovingly remembered by his siblings, Byron (Marlene) Houg and family, Bronwyn (Jeff) Jones and family; and many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends.
Bernie was proceeded in death by his wife, Mary; his parents, Carl and Marcella Houg; and brothers, Bill Van Steenberg and Bradley Houg.
