COLLEGE SPOTLIGHT: SMSU’s Malayna Hemmen

Hemmen was a multi-sport athlete at Elkton-Lake Benton

MARSHALL — Malayna Hemmen is currently a sophomore on the Southwest Minnesota State University women’s cross country team.

Hemmen was a standout multi-sport athlete at Elkton-Lake Benton.

This past weekend, Hemmen ran for the Mustangs at the Dordt University Classic in Sioux Center, Iowa.

She recorded a time of 29:38 in the women’s varsity 6,000-meter race, and SMSU placed 16th in the Gold Division with 443 points.

Minnesota State was the overall champion, and Bellevue’s Grace Steinmetz took top honors in 20:40.

Earlier this season, Hemmen clocked in with a time of 18:38 in the women’s 3,600-meter race during the Wayne State Classic in Wayne, Neb., in late September. Distances were reduced due to heat-related concerns.

Hemmen competed in two meets during the 2024 season.

Malayna also is a member of the SMSU women’s track and field team.

Hemmen is the daughter of Robin and Luke Hemmen. Her older brother, Jack, plays football for Dakota State University. Malayna is a marketing major with a minor in psychology at SMSU.
