CROSS COUNTRY: Just a freshman, ELB’s Kinner qualifies for state

Meet set for Saturday at Broadland Creek in Huron

GARRETSON, S.D. — Elkton-Lake Benton freshman runner Adam Kinner has punched his ticket to the Class A state cross country meet.

Kinner placed 17th in a time of 17 minutes, 24.68 at the Region 2A meet on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at River Ridge Golf Course.

Elks’ head cross country coach Mark R. Harming said Kinner’s mental approach has served him well all season.

In South Dakota, the top-20 individual placements and top-four schools reach the state meet, which will take place at Broadland Creek Golf Course in Huron.

Several Flandreau runners also qualified for state, including defending state Class A girls champion Faith Wiese, who was second in 17:27.65.

In the 4,000-meter junior varsity boys race, ELB’s Noah Kinner was 39th (16:30.71), Will Deutz 53rd (17:19.4), Andrew McMahon 55th (17:22.90), Lane Yockey 83rd (19:43.29) and Cody Dykstra 86th (20:37.61) in a field of 91 runners. The Elks’ Khloe Neill was 47th in the JV girls event, clocking in at 19:10.74.

State meet information

HURON — The Class A state boys race is set for noon Saturday, Oct. 25.

The rest of the meet schedule is as follows: Class AA boys, 12:30 p.m.; Class B boys, 1 p.m.; Class A girls, 1:30 p.m.; Class AA girls, 2 p.m.; Class B girls, 2:30 p.m.

Awards will commence following the conclusion of the Class B girls race.

Medals will be presented to the top-25 individual runners in each class, and to members of the top-six teams. The overall team champion and runner-up will earn trophies, with plaques to the third- through sixth-place finishers.
