About 8 o’clock last evening a fire got started in the restaurant back of Ed. Crook’s billiard hall and gained such rapid headway that an alarm was turned in. Before the engines reached the spot, however, the flames had been checked and they were sent back to the house unused. A portion of the wall of the building was scorched and the entire room filled with a dense cloud of smoke, but no serious damage was done. The fire started from a gasoline stove.

Pipestone is at present suffering from a lack of houses to rent. All agents report a much greater demand for houses than it is possible to fill and if there is a single one in town standing vacant it is because of its extremely undesirable location. Pipestone still continues to grow in population as well as in business.

When Pipestone meets Luverne here Wednesday night the Arrows will be aiming at their 16th win over the Cardinals since the Luverne-Pipestone series started back in 1922. In the last 11 years Pipestone has been able to chalk up an impressive string of victories against its old foe – only once since 1939 have the Cardinals been able to wrest a victory from the Arrows. It was in 1947 that Luverne chalked up a win by the narrow margin of 13-12.

A dream came true this week for Mr. and Mrs. Alan Van Veldhuizen of 836 West Main. They will be going on an all-expense paid trip for two weeks anywhere in the world they choose. This dream vacation was the Grand Prize won by Mrs. Van Veldhuizen (Elaine) in the Bank America Travelers Cheques Sweepstakes. Elaine works as a teller at the Pipestone National Bank. Her name was entered each time she sold Bank America Travelers Cheques. Names of tellers in Bank America’s 32,000 outlets across the country were entered too. All the names were collected in Los Angeles where Cary Grant drew Elaine’s name as Grand Prize winner.

Pipestone County Sheriff Lyle Landgren said a recent drug search at Pipestone-Jasper High School yielded eight lockers which contained “residue,” but he said there was “nothing major” discovered during the recent canine search. Landgren said the county’s K-9 unit conducted the search. He said the dog “hit” on eight lockers which were opened and searched by school officials. No drugs were found on the premises, but a knife was found in a coat pocket.
