The Great Northern water tank went dry last night and a freight train was left stranded here on the main track directly in front of the depot. As a result passenger and freight trains were compelled to load and unload at the street crossing south of the station this morning while the freight engine ran up to Florence for water.

The office of the Pipestone Fruit Company was broken into Monday night by burglars. They succeeded in opening a safe-cabinet in the office, from which they obtained $1.09 in money, but so far as can be learned, no other loot was taken.

E. L. Bauman, of this city, former manager of the Holland Creamery, was arrested on a charge of embezzlement of funds belonging to the creamery complaint. His hearing was set for Wednesday, Oct. 28. He furnished a bond of two hundred dollars for his appearance at that time.

Getting two birds with one stone is just peanuts for R. A. Hyde, Sr., of Pipestone — he did the almost impossible Thursday when he knocked over four geese with one shot. Hyde spotted a flock of geese on the ground and crept cautiously up to the birds and fired one shell into their midst and four geese dropped dead. As the flock, taking to air, circled back, one goose was flying lower than the others. He was apparently hit by the shot which killed his four companions. Hyde and his son dropped the bird to give them a bag of five geese in only a few minutes.

It’ll be a big day for Pipestone youngsters Oct. 31 when the 12th annual Policemen’s Halloween party is staged here. Designed to take the place of more prankish celebrating, the party is open to all city children, and a special schedule of events to interest all age groups has been set. The Halloween program here is financed by the Community Chest.

A potentially very dangerous situation existed as the result of vandalism here Saturday night. The Police Department reports that six or seven fire hydrants were opened by vandals just after midnight. That night, Police Chief Merv Hartman said that due to the painting of the water tower near the hospital, water was being pumped manually. “Six open fire hydrants would have drained the water in three hours. After two hours we would have been in trouble if there were a fire,” Hartman said. They estimate the hydrants were opened just after midnight until about 1:30 a.m. all over town before they could be shut off.

Plans are well underway for Pipestone’s second holiday parade — renamed “Twinkledazzle” — on Friday night, Nov. 24 at 7 p.m. on Pipestone’s Main Street. The event called the “Holidazzle” parade last year was a huge success. The 2000 parade theme is “Fun in the Frost.”

For nearly three hours Monday afternoon, a “substantial” power outage stopped the community in its tracks. At about 1:15 p.m., a power pole located seven miles south of Tracy apparently started on fire, toppling the pole into nearby Lake Sarah. By the time Excel/Northern States Power crew members were able to repair the problem, it was 4 p.m. The outage shut down work at Bayliner Marine, stalled many business operations  and made for a dull day at Pipestone-Jasper High School. The outage also affected Hadley, Slayton, Tracy, the Lake Yankton area and the Rock River substation area.
