Devon Dixon is the newest member of the Jasper Fire Department. He said he joined the department because he wanted to give back to the community and had time available to help.

“I like the idea of being on the fire department and helping other people in need,” he said.

Dixon said he spoke to Fire Chief Kip Johnson about joining the department and was invited to one of its meetings. The fire department approved him after that and the Jasper City Council approved him as a new member of the department at its Sept. 9 meeting.

The next step will be to take firefighter training, which hasn’t been scheduled yet. In the meantime, Dixon can go on calls with the fire department and help in a limited capacity such as directing traffic or helping with hose and equipment. He said he’d responded to one call so far, which was a vehicle accident.

Dixon said he hopes to keep learning about being a firefighter and get better at it over time as he takes the training and responds to calls.

Dixon grew up in Worthington and moved to Jasper in 2018 after he met Sonya Miller, of Jasper. The couple has five children ranging in age from 1 to 16. Dixon works at Dells Nursing and Rehab Center in Dell Rapids as the maintenance manager. In his free time, he enjoys fishing, camping and spending time with his family, which includes attending softball games and visiting parks.
