Donald “Don” Rieck, age 90, of Phoenix, Ariz., formerly of Pipestone, Minn. passed away on July 15, 2024 at Hospice of the Valley – Sherman Home in Phoenix.
A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, May 28, 2025 at 11:30 a.m. at Old Woodlawn Cemetery in Pipestone with Rev. Evan Schiller officiating.
Donald Henry Rieck was born on May 28, 1934 to Rudolph H. and Meta (Bartels) Rieck in Osborne Township, Pipestone, County, Minn. He was baptized on July 1, 1934 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Edgerton, Minn. He was confirmed in the faith on March 21, 1948 at St. Paul Lutheran. He attended school at Pipestone County District 43 through the 8th grade. In 1949 his family moved to a farm northwest of Pipestone where he worked alongside his parents. He attended Pipestone High School. He enlisted in the United States Army in January of 1956. He served in Japan in the post office and as a Track Vehicle Mechanic and Auto Mechanic. While in the service he attained his GED. He was honorably discharged in October of 1957. Upon his return he met Virginia Hass in September of 1959 and the two were united in marriage on October 1, 1960 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in Island Lake Township, near Lynd, Minn. Don farmed until the late 70s and then worked for Pipestone Vault and Monument in Pipestone. He retired and helped at Carrow’s True Value in Pipestone. In September of 2003, he and Virginia moved to Phoenix, Ariz. He passed away on July 15, 2024, at Hospice of the Valley – Sherman Home, in Phoenix.
Don had been a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Pipestone where he served as the secretary, Sunday School teacher, Trustee, and as a youth counselor for a time. The couple attended Hope Church Lutheran in Phoenix while living in Arizona.
Don is lovingly remembered by his wife, Virginia; daughter, Renee (Todd) Augustad; son, Ryan (Mary) Rieck; granddaughters, Meagan Rieck Ray and Samantha Rieck; great-granddaughter, Rose Rieck; great-grandsons, Christopher and Skyler Rieck; and many loving nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Rudolph and Meta; one son, Dennis Donald Rieck; sisters, Margaret (Archie) Borman, Mildred (Kurt) Mueller; brothers, Richard Rieck, Raymond (Elaine) Rieck; and son-in-law, Lonny Boese.
