Fall heat sets record

A record high temperature of 91 degrees was recorded for Pipestone on Monday, Sept. 29, overcoming the previous record of 86 for the day, which was set last year.

Kyle Weisser, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, said the last couple years have been warm, but it’s not yet clear if it’s a trend.

“It’s always hard to say after hundreds of years of records if two or three years in a row make a trend or a change in anything, but it definitely has been warm and very dry this past week or two,” he said.

Weisser said the average high for this year is around 67 to 68. Highs during the week of Sept. 28 to Oct. 4 ranged from 78 to 91.

Looking ahead, he said the temperature was expected to warm up again by Thursday, Oct. 9 and into the weekend with highs reaching the mid 70s to 80, but that there was not much precipitation expected.
