GOLF: Douty’s memory is eternal

#LiveLikeJoe's second annual tournament benefits Pipestone

The #LiveLikeJoe Memorial Tournament featured a slightly adjusted format this year with two nine-hole tournaments.

Both morning and afternoon sessions featured full participation, per tournament organizers, this past Saturday at Pipestone Country Club.

Robert Petersen’s group was victorious during the morning nine, scoring 29. Petersen’s team featured Brent Dinger, Zach Warne and Mitch Warne. Ties were broken by “handicap holes.”

In the afternoon, Mitchell Biever’s group was tops, a foursome also with Cooper Kanthak, Maddox Biever and McCaden Biever. The group carded a 30 to win by one stroke.

“I think that in the spirit of #givelikejoe and #livelikejoe, the day was a great success,” said John Draper, who served as master of ceremonies.

Weather was ideal with sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s.

“The goal is to raise some funds that will be invested in our community, and to have some fun while doing so,” Draper added. “It’s amazing to see so many people come out to support the cause in one way or another, and just to have an enjoyable day.”

People made the most of the day, living up to the late Joe Douty’s mantra.

“I am super happy and utterly overwhelmed, in a good way, with how the day turned out,” said Alison Douty, Joe’s wife. “From the golf teams getting filled to the number of items that were donated for the silent auction to all the people that showed up to support in some way was amazing.”

In all, a five-figure dollar amount was raised.

Dari King sponsored an interesting game. Contestants had to catch a marshmallow in the mouth from a partner’s chip shot.

The seven winners were Jackson Morgan, Owen Draper, Will Draper, Luke Paulsen, Connor Zephier, Corbin Faber and Nick Bruns.

Pipestone Area Youth Fastpitch sponsored a contest on Hole No. 6 where contestants chipped a ball onto a mat for points.

Mitch Warne won the top prize and Corbin Faber was second.

Lee Tracy won a putting contest — sponsored by the Pipestone Fire Department — on Hole No. 1.

No one was fortunate to record an ace during the hole-in-one contest sponsored by First Bank & Trust.

There also was a best dressed contest, with Eric Brockberg’s foursome winning the morning session for the foursome’s well-coordinated green-and-black outfits. The group also featured Kristin Brockberg, Vivian Brockberg and Cayden Zephier.

Team Draper, in argyle, had the best outfits in the afternoon. The quartet featured Paulsen, Owen Draper, Will Draper and Austin Musch. Addison Draper and Meredith Draper were caddies.

In conjunction with the golf tournament, bean bags also flew.

James Skyberg and his son, Damian Skyberg, captured the top spot in the morning. Rachel Skyberg and Adam Schumacher were second.

Damian Skyberg and Adam Schumacher were the afternoon victors, with Daryl Kanthak and Mike Draper second.

There was a high-tech auction system this year, and three top raffle prizes awarded in the form of a five-day Texas coast holiday at South Padre Island, a 75-inch flat-screen television and an eBike (with motor used to assist propulsion).

After the conclusion of the tournament, local band Old Indian Trick performed a slew of cover favorites.

The committee is “in discussion” for dates in 2026, Alison Douty reported. Information will be posted on the tournament’s Facebook page.
