GOLF SPOTLIGHT SERIES: Tyler GC is a blessing for region

Course is a par-35 on the back nine, venue feature full restaurant

TYLER — Lincoln County is blessed to have an 18-hole facility in the form of Tyler Golf Club.

“We are very lucky to have such a great course in our small community,” said Tim O’Leary, a Tyler G.C. member who also serves as head boys and girls golf coach for Russell-Tyler-Ruthton.

O’Leary’s daughters have used the course as a training ground, with both qualifying for the Minnesota State High School League state tournament on multiple occasions.

Tyler G.C. is not lengthy by any means. The par-71 (a par-35 on the back nine) plays 6,232 yards from the blue tees, 5,918 white and 5,336 red/gold (ladies’ tees).

The course features lateral water hazards on several holes (Nos. 1, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17 and 18).

Per course governances, there are out-of-bounds areas on Hole Nos. 5, 6, 7, 15 and 16. The area is marked by stakes on 5, 6 and 7.

Playing the course is made easier with yardage markers on both par-4s and par-5.

Clubhouse manager Jennifer Stolp said her favorite hole is No. 10, a par-5 measuring 474 yards. O’Leary mentioned No. 11 (a 342-yard par-4) ranks up there because of the waterfall behind the green.

The longest hole is No. 4, a challenging dogleg right par-5 that measures 528 yards. Hole No. 2 is the shortest, covering 156 yards, but it still presents a challenge thanks to the water.

Rate structure and more

Tyler GC has economical pricing, with nine holes for $22 and 18 holes for $34 weekdays.

Weekend and holiday rates are $30 for nine and $40 for 18. Cart rentals are $15 (nine) and $20 (18).

This is one of the few courses that has punch cards for purchase. Five nine-hole rounds cost $110, and five 18-hole rounds $160.

What’s more, membership rates aren’t pricey, either. A yearly family membership can be obtained for $950. Individual rates are even cheaper, as little as $100 for youth through high school and $275 for college-age players.

A membership form may be found on the course’s website: tylergolfclub.com.

Tyler GC boasts a full-service restaurant in the CR7 Bar and Grill, named because the course is located on Lincoln County Road 7.

The restaurant offers a range of appetizers, salads, baskets, wraps and 14-inch fresh made-to-order pizza — plus a top-notch selection of beverages.

The clubhouse features a spacious conference hall with a vaulted ceiling and plenty of light from several windows, perfect for meetings and parties.

Stolp reported the club recently remodeled its outdoor dining capabilities on an expanded deck.

The Tyler Fire Department will conduct a tournament this Saturday, Aug. 16, and the superintendent’s revenge event has been slated for Sept. 13. Thursday night marks league night, including one with best-ball formatted play.

Kiesen Pahl is employed as the course superintendent.

A unique feature of the course is the driving range, located next to a municipal airport. Carts are modernized with a pair of USB charging ports.

Recent happenings

Parker Fey, a Southwest Minnesota Christian golfer, has enjoyed recent success at Tyler GC.

Fey recorded a hole-in-one on Hole No. 2 en route to winning the 15-18 age division at the club’s junior tournament, and he also discovered the wooden Æbleskiver during a practice round in late June.

Other junior winners were Braycen Hook (10-under) and Jack Jensen (11-14). More than 20 youth participated, including several girls.

The venue already has completed its yearly club championship, with O’Leary the overall champion. Other winners were Jason Gravley, Tim Malecha (senior), Jen Schreurs (women’s division) and Wayne Herold (handicap).

Gregg Schultz and Nick Heitkamp recorded hole-in-ones in 2024. A complete list of aces dating back to 2001 is available on the course’s website.

TGC touts itself as a U.S. Kids Golf Family Course.
