REDWOOD FALLS — Pipestone Area Schools’ boys basketball team called a pair of timeouts in the closing seconds.
The goal was to come up with a possible game-winning play.
PAS senior Matthew DeBates inbounded the ball to teammate Blake Bosma, who was waiting for it in the corner. In turn, Bosma spotted Austin Musch inside the lane.

Redwood Valley’s Zach Lundeen and Dylan Anderson both pestered Musch, whose shot clipped off the front of the rim.

“The boys played hard,” PAS head coach Michael Slaba said. “They put themselves in great position to take the lead late. We got the shot we were looking for.”
A jump-ball situation ensued, and possession favored the Cardinals. The Cardinals inbounded the ball, and Musch fouled Jayden Crawford while the pair vied for the pass.
Crawford missed the front-end of a one-and-one free throw. Bosma grabbed the rebound, but Crawford blocked a potential full-court heave.
In the end, Redwood Valley (1-3) earned its first win of the season, 68-67, over PAS — a week that saw the Cardinals play two one-point games. New London-Spicer beat them, 73-72, on Thursday, Dec. 11.
PAS (1-3) had earned its first victory four days earlier, a 65-55 conquest over non-conference foe Murray County Central.
The Arrows’ perimeter defense still needs attention, especially after allowing Lundeen to score 28 points on nine 3-pointers.

“We played man-to-man for a little but, but we stayed true to who we are,” Slaba explained. “Lundeen is a good athlete who made some tough deep shots for them that we weren’t expecting based off the film we watched.”
Zach Wilson added 18 points (four treys and two made free throws) and PAS surrendered 16 3-pointers overall.
Musch countered for PAS with 21 points before fouling out with 0.7 seconds remaining. DeBates and Bosma also scored in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively.
The Arrows enjoyed a 19-9 edge in free-throw attempts.

Earlier in the week, PAS downed Murray County Central 65-55 for its first victory of the season, and Slaba said it felt good to “get that monkey off their backs.”
The conquest set the tone for how well the Arrows played versus Redwood Valley, and during training sessions.
