Madison downs Elkton-Lake Benton at Entringer Classic

MARSHALL — Michael Gunnink scored the go-ahead basket as Edgerton Public downed Minneota 63-61 at the Marshall Hoops Club Holiday Classic on Wednesday, Dec. 31.

Tucker Arp also connected on a key shot down the stretch as Flying Dutchmen improved to 5-2 on the season.

Edgerton defeated Pipestone Area Schools, 65-51, on Monday evening. The Arrows dropped to 2-8.

Minneota (2-5) had several chances to tie or take the lead in the closing moments; however, the Vikings missed two 3-point attempts and a shot inside the lane.

Edgerton found itself down 33-31 at intermission and 40-34 during the second half.

The Flying Dutchmen had a 20-12 edge in free-throw attempts and made good on 45 percent of their shots from the floor.

Gunnink scored a team-best 17 points on 7-of-12 shooting, and he also corralled seven rebounds to lead in that category as well.

Four different Minneota players scored in double figures, paced by Leo Hennen’s 18 and Tristen Sussner added 14 on six field goals.

Montevideo 79,

Pipestone Area 31

Class AA fourth-ranked Montevideo was simply too much for Pipestone Area in another Classic game conducted on Dec. 31.

Luka Quist was the lone Arrow to crack double digits with 10 points, including one 3-pointer.

The Thunder Hawks raced out to a 42-14 intermission, and built on their advantage during the second half.

Matthew DeBates distributed three assists. Blake Bosma had five rebounds, including two on the offensive glass, plus eight points and four steals.

Montevideo played crisply, connecting on 33-of-57 field goals (57.9 percent) and committing just 12 turnovers to the Arrows’ 23.

Pipestone Area travels to Madison, Minn., for a game versus Lac qui Parle Valley before returning home for Windom Area Friday and Jackson County Central on Tuesday, Jan. 13.

Elkton-Lake Benton 72 (OT)

BROOKINGS, S.D. — Elkton-Lake Benton rallied to force overtime, however, Madison outscored the Elks 14-7 during the extra session for the win.

ELB made good on 10-of-22 3-pointers, and four players tallied double figures.

Colt Beck and Joseph Nibbe both had 18 points, while Myles Poindexter chipped in with 11 and Ethan Wiskur 10.

Madison’s Henry Veenhof posted a double-double with 20 points and 10 rebounds for former PAS head coach Chad White, now in the same capacity for the Bulldogs.

ELB played host to Tri-Valley on Monday, Jan. 5, falling by double-digit points.
