HIGH SCHOOL CROSS COUNTRY: Turkey Trot provides true test of running

ELB's Kinner earns another top-5 finish, this time at De Smet

WORTHINGTON — There were two positive outcomes for the Pipestone Area Schools cross country team from the 58th annual Turkey Trot at Prairie View Nature Preserve.

Three Arrow girls used a “pack mentality” to help the team to a third-place team finish.

What’s more, PAS fielded a complete team on the boys’ side for a counted score.

Amelia Bucher, Rhaelee Heidebrink and Alivia Fruechte finished in the respective 13th, 14th and 16th positions in the varsity girls race.

“What Amelia, Rhaelee and Alivia did is exactly what we need to be in the talk for our upcoming meets,” Moeller said in an email to The Pipestone County Star. “I was really impressed with how they performed, giving us a solid third-place finish.”

Ramon Macias returned to the lineup, taking 15th as the Arrows’ top finisher among varsity boys — clocking in at 18:17.83.

Joshua Zupp also placed well, taking 39th in a time of 20:57.70.

“It feels great to be back at that point again,” Moeller said regarding fielding a complete boys team. “I just hope all the boys can stay healthy, and find a way to keep pushing each other to get better.”

For Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton, Hannah Masselink raced her way to second place among varsity girls (20:07.41, 19 seconds behind overall medalist Laiken Farris from Murray County Central/Fulda).

“Having a course with no trees or significant landmarks makes it a psychological battle for sure,” Moeller commented. “I would put this as one of our toughest courses from a visual perspective. It really forces you to rely on your ability to go out and compete.”

The Turkey Trot is part of a thrilling weekend of events during King Turkey Day festivities, which also featured both a five- and 10-kilometer run, and five-kilometer walk.

Former PAS runner Kaden Mastbergen participated, placing 23rd overall and third in his age division (49:28, 7:58 pace per mile).

Canby Invitational

CANBY — Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s girls placed third while the boys were sixth out of seven teams at the Canby Invitational Tuesday, Sept. 9.
