HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Flags, miscues doom Arrows

Arrows called for 75 yards in penalties in loss at RV

REDWOOD FALLS — Late in the second quarter, the Pipestone Area Schools football team had a chance to extend its lead.

However, the Arrows were stopped short in Redwood Valley territory.

“We got stopped on fourth down toward the end of the second quarter,” PAS head coach Scott Boomgaarden noted.

On their next drive, Cardinals’ quarterback Zack Lundeen connected with wide receiver Lane Cooper on a 47-yard TD pass play.

Cooper added the subsequent extra-point kick, capping off a five-play, 74-yard drive and Redwood Valley would eventually defeat PAS 29-14 at the Inglis Athletic Complex.

This was a typical season opener, chock full of penalties and growing pains.

“We had too many big penalties and miscues in big situations,” Boomgaarden explained. “We have a lot to clean up.”

PAS will play its first home game of the season on Friday, Sept. 5, versus Windom Area at Paulsen Athletic Complex. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

The Arrows turned the ball over on downs multiple times during the game, and they had three punts compared to Redwood Valley’s five. And two turnovers.

PAS was called for ineligible player downfield on multiple occasions, and both quarterbacks Austin Musch and Lundeen were called for delay of game twice — that’s despite no visible play clock to be found in the stadium.

Offensive lineman get a three-yard cushion from the line of scrimmage at the high school level. In the NFL, the margin is just one yard.

Boomgaarden said Redwood Valley’s returning experience at skill positions also was a factor in the game. Senior running back Duran Kramer also punched in a TD.

Lundeen was moved from receiver to quarterback by his father, head coach Matt Lundeen, before the season began.

Making the loss all the more tough to stomach, PAS actually finished with a 306-215 edge in total offense.

Musch directed the Arrows well; however, they got bogged down going scoreless in the second half. He was 18-of-27 for 200 yards, one TD pass to Kayden White, and 53 net yards rushing and another score.

Cayden Zephier and White were the leading targets with nine catches for 99 yards combined. Luka Quist added three catches for 40 yards, and Musch completed passes to six different players. Zephier added 41 net yards rushing.

Musch finished with 13 tackle points and Xavier Banjoko 11. The Arrows had several tackles for loss, but no additional special defensive numbers
