HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: Huskies are ‘as advertised’

The Class AA No. 1 ranked Jackson County Central football team came as advertised in last Friday’s game at the Paulsen athletic complex.

Most everyone talks about how prolific the offense is. But, what about that defense, too?

The Huskies held the Arrows to just 46 total yards of offense in a 48-6 conquest.

“They play fast and physical,” PAS head coach Scott Boomgaarden noted.

Boomgaarden said the Arrows had “opportunities to move ball,” but it never quite materialized.

Jackson County Central stopped one possible drive on an Isaac Hesebeck interception. Other times, quarterback Austin Musch had the ball sail on him resulting in incompletions.

The numbers were bleak. Xavier Banjoko was the top rusher with 16 yards. Cayden Zephier gained just 23 yards from two receptions.

PAS (2-2) scored its only touchdown on the final play of the game as Zachary Amen forced a fumble and returned it 54 yards for a score.

“It was good for a younger kid to have success,” Boomgaarden said.

By intermission, Jackson County Central (4-0) established a 36-0 lead with University of Minnesota pledge Roman Voss in a starring role.

Voss’ most impressive work was during a 53-yard TD strike to Brody Anderson, which could be seen on the Pipestone County Star’s Facebook page. Voss also had a 58-yard TD run.

Voss rushed for a career-high 213 yards, the first Husky to run for that much since Gabriel Wolff did so in 2022. He also threw for 163 yards.

Mason Fruechte and Banjoko both had 12 tackle points. Banjoko registered one tackle for loss. Carlos Saenlouangraj played hard defensively with 10 tackle points. Jakob Dion had a pair of impressive passes defensed.

Boomgaarden said the Arrows must have a short memory, especially with the “Battle Axe” game looming large this Friday versus Luverne. The motivation should surely be there.
