HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL: No shootout, rather a shut out win for Edgerton

RTR also claims second win of the season

TRUMAN — Edgerton Public demonstrated balance on offense while the defense earned a shutout en route to the Flying Dutchmen blanking Granada-Huntley-East Chain-Truman Saturday, Sept. 6.

Edgerton (2-0) will play its first home game of the season 7 p.m. Friday versus Mountain Lake Area-Comfrey.

Colin Scholten threw long-range TD passes to Tucker Arp and Michael Gunnink, both of whom also scored in the first half on runs.

Gunnink added three two-point conversions, and Kaisen Hendriks one as the Flying Dutchmen staked themselves to a 38-0 lead by intermission.

Arp also returned an interception for a TD and Weston Van’t Hof scored on a short run in the second half. A Jaxton Scholten two-point conversion capped off the scoring for Edgerton.

After the game on Christensen Broadcasting, Edgerton head coach Andrew Fleischman complimented linemen Tanner Thomson and Brady Jandl for their aptitude in making the offense run efficiently.

SLEEPY EYE — Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s defense held Sleepy Eye United to 49 rushing yards as the Knights equalled last year’s win total.

The Knights controlled this Mid-South District, Purple Subdistrict game from start to finish.

Tyson Burns blazed in for RTR’s first TD on a 7-yard run.

Then quarterback Gavin Schreurs connected with Colten Thomsen on a 27-yard TD pass to cap an 11-play drive, adding the subsequent two-point conversion.

Burns added another TD run in the second half, this time from 15 yards out.

RTR (2-0) will play host to Lakeview at 7 p.m. Friday in Tyler.

Elkton-Lake Benton 28

FREEMAN, S.D. — In a battle of top-ranked South Dakota Class 9AA teams, Freeman/Marion/Freeman Academy outscored Elkton-Lake Benton 13-0 to pull away for good.

FMFA’s Luke Peters rushed 43 yards for a TD, and Riley Tschetter hooked up with Tate Sorenson on a 35-yard scoring pass.

ELB quarterback Colt Beck passed for two TD, with Myles Poindexter snagging both scoring receptions from 17 and 33 yards away. Eliot Erickson added a pair of TD runs, and Wanner Enriquez was 4-of-4 on extra-point kicks.

Beck finished the game going 10-of-17 for 157 yards, and Erickson rushed 17 times for 145 yards.

Defensively, Taiton Boersma was the Elks’ top player with 13 tackles, a forced fumble and two quarterback pressures.

ELB (2-1) will be back at home this week, with a 7 p.m. Friday kickoff versus De Smet, a team featuring 6-foot-9, 320-pound lineman Grant Wilkinson (who has already verbally committed to South Dakota State University).
