The Pipestone Area Schools’ balanced offense and stingy defense were both on display in last Friday’s home opener.
PAS nearly doubled Windom Area in total yardage en route to its first victory of the season as the Arrows downed the Eagles, 26-7, at the Paulsen Athletic Complex.
On Parents Night, parents went home happy. And so did players, coaches and fans.
“I thought the kids played well,” PAS head coach Scott Boomgaarden said. “We made big plays when we needed to, and we executed.”

The Arrow offense generated 367 yards with Cayden Zephier rushing for 96 yards on 13 carries. Zephier added four receptions for 66 yards. He was responsible for more than 44 percent of the team’s offense.
Boomgaarden credited quarterback Austin Musch with finding open receivers. And the receivers ran efficient routes to make the offense click.
Defensively, Mason Fruechte played his finest scholastic game to date with 14 tackle points in the Pipestone County Star’s defensive system. Fruechte also had one tackle for loss.

Eighth-grader Oliver Sterud added 10 tackle points, Trey Boelman two tackles for negative yardage and Zephier an interception. Xavier Banjoko also came up from his linebacker spot for tackles.
“I thought we tackled better this week,” Boomgaarden said, “and the corners helped in the run game.”
Windom quarterback Jackson Joyce was under pressure on many snaps from scrimmage. Joyce was called for intentional grounding on a first-quarter play that resulted in a change of possession.
The Arrows then went on a 6-play, 69-yard drive culminating in a 34-yard Zephier TD run. Another highlight on the drive was a Jakob Dion reception.
Luka Quist made a crucial snag on fourth down for another TD with 3:14 remaining in the second quarter — pushing the Arrow lead to 18-0 at intermission.
Quist’s catch may be seen in video form at the Star’s Facebook page.
Dion caught his first TD pass of the season in the third quarter — covering 19 yards.

Windom’s Steven Meyer later ended the Arrows’ shutout bid on a 7-yard TD run, with Rodrigo Hernandez Gomez adding the subsequent point-after kick. Neither team scored during the fourth quarter.
The Arrows now have a modicum of confidence heading into this week’s road test at Minnesota Valley Lutheran in New Ulm.
