HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS BASKETBALL: Sister act proves too much for PAS

Southworths net 70 points in eight-point victory for St. Peter

Pipestone Area Schools’ Jadyn Kor scored on a scoop shot with 25.1 seconds remaining in the second half.

That brought the Arrows to within four points of St. Peter.

However, the Saints’ sister act of Annika Southworth and Kylie Southworth canned four free throws combined during the closing seconds for a 78-70 conquest in this Big South Conference game Saturday.

Still, the Arrows bounced back from a 40-point drubbing versus Jackson County Central last Thursday with a strong performance here.

“It was quite the turnaround from the Jackson game,” PAS head coach Grant Everson said. “Honestly, I just think we played with a lot more energy and confidence. I keep telling the girls that the shooting and scoring improvements will come, and that’s what happened.”

Unfortunately for the Arrows, they ran into the Southworth sisters. Annika, a senior, scored 40 points while Kylie added 30 more. So, yeah, that’s nearly 90 percent of the Saints’ offensive output.

“The Southworth girls were unbelievable,” Everson said. “They are so fast and talented. They were a tough match-up for us. We obviously could’ve done some things differently to try and slow them down. But, it really comes down to them making a ton of shots, and they did that.”

Annika Southworth in November officially signed with Trine University, an NCAA Division III school based in Indiana. She is a three-time all-conference player who played on the Saints’ Class AAA consolation champion squad in 2023-24.

Meanwhile, for PAS, rising freshman Amyra Mahik played her finest game ever — finishing with a double-double composed of 27 points and 10 rebounds.

Mahik sank nine field goals, including three 3-pointers, and she was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line. Kor added 21 points, with 14 of them in the second half.

“Amyra has been playing well,” Everson said. “I think she just believed in herself, and the shots began to fall. She just needs to stay patient and confident.”

The Arrows were up as many as eight points in the first half (37-29, 1:23) after Mariah Moeller made a pair of foul shots. St. Peter closed the gap to a 39-36 deficit at intermission.

Taryn Tuinstra swished a jumper from the elbow to bring the scores level at 55-all with 10:27 left in the second half.

Annika Southworth canned a 3-ball on the Saints’ next possession, and they never trailed after that. St. Peter’s lead was as great as 73-61 before PAS made one final run. The Southworth sisters finished with 12 3-pointers in all.

Arrow notes

PAS played Worthington on Tuesday night in advance of Friday’s showdown with the talented crew from Windom Area.

The Eagles feature Hadley Sammons, like Kor a 1,000-point scorer.

For that game, the Pipestone Arrows Booster Club has announced a “Dari King” menu complete with hot dogs, chili dogs or barbecues (Taverns). Food will be sold until halftime of the boys’ game. Cost is $5

The Arrows also defeated rival Luverne, 65-42, on Tuesday, Dec. 3, behind Kor’s 24 points on eight field goals and 7-of-10 shooting from the stripe.

Tuinstra and Mahik both contributed 12 points as PAS established an eye-popping 32-8 lead at the break.
