HIGH SCHOOL GIRLS TENNIS: Arrows enter win column twice

PAS also defeats Benson/KMS coop

The Pipestone Area Schools girls tennis team capped off a busy stretch with a road split Saturday, Sept. 6.

The Arrows nipped Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg, 4-3; however, lost to Morris Area-Hancock/West Central Area, 5-2.

“It was huge for the girls,” PAS head coach James Skyberg said of the team earning two match wins last week. The Arrows also topped River Valley (Springfield), 5-2, on Tuesday, Sept. 2.

Skyberg said the Arrows are beginning to play with more confidence, and that has resulted in more success.

To beat Benson/KMS, PAS swept the doubles matches and Aleryn Brinkmeyer picked up a 6-4, 6-4 victory at No. 2 singles — beating Kaela Carrou, 6-4, 6-4.

Skyberg said it’s likely Vivian Brockberg and Jasmine Boeke will play primarily No. 1 doubles for the rest of the season — preparation for Class A sections in October.

Brockberg and Boeke needed three sets to top Tara Beyer and Emily McGinty by scores of 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

The No. 2 doubles tandem composed of Iva Witte and Kate Hanson also went three sets before stopping Annabelle DeToy and Ella Lysen, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

Dependable No. 3 doubles duo Aubrey Brockberg and Sophia Baatz dispatched Elizabeth Jopp and Hazel Habben, 6-3, 6-2.

The Boeke-Brockberg and Baatz-Brockberg teams also won matches at Morris as part of a successful day.

Vivian Brockberg was victorious in singles while Hanson-Witte and Baatz-Brockberg earned doubles wins versus Luverne on Thursday, Sept. 4. However, it wasn’t enough as the Battle Rackets traveling trophy remained in Rock County on a 4-3 Cardinal win.

The Arrows will be home twice next week for matches versus Fairmont (Tuesday, Sept. 16) and New Ulm (Thursday, Sept. 18).

Skyberg reported singles player Laura Minet is currently on the mend with an unspecified injury. Minet will return to action in about 10 days to two weeks.
