SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — Pipestone Area Schools’ tennis players Vivian Brockberg and Jasmine Boeke advanced to the second day of the Section 3A individual tournament.
(Editor’s Note: A recap from the second day of the tournament will be found in the Thursday, Oct. 23, edition of the Pipestone County Star.)
The top-seeded Arrow tandem of Brockberg and Boeke dispatched their first-round and quarterfinal opponents, yielding just five games en route to the semifinals at Huether Family Match Pointe.

“Vivian’s been here before, obviously,” PAS head coach James Skyberg noted. “She knows what it takes.”
Skyberg also complimented Boeke’s low-key, laid-back approach to playing doubles.
After a “shaky” start, the girls mental focus sharpened as Boeke and Brockberg defeated Luverne’s Makayla Oechsle and Bergen Ask, 6-3, 6-0, in the opening round.
Then the pair defeated Ella Lysen and Hazel Habben from Benson/KMS in the quarterfinals, 6-2, 6-0.
Skyberg said Boeke and Brockberg also served more effectively as the day went on.

What’s more, Brockberg relied on her experience with former playing partner Alicia Haack — the doubles tandem that reached the Minnesota State High School League tournament a year ago.
Brockberg and Boeke were scheduled to play Nora Mages and Kylieann Johnson of Montevideo in the semifinals.
Aubrey Brockberg and Sophia Baatz are a promising doubles team with a bright future; however, they ran into more experienced players at the section tournament.
Seeded fourth in the doubles draw, Emily McGinty and Tara Beyer from the Benson/Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg coop defeated Brockberg and Baatz, 6-0, 6-2.
In singles, both Kate Hanson and Olyvia Weber took four games from their opponents before bowing out.
Izabell Hoffman from MACA/WCA downed Hanson, 6-1, 6-3 in a match-up of the seventh and 10th seeds in singles. Ava Oakes (the No. 4 singles seed from Benson/KMS) beat Weber, 6-1, 6-3, to round out the Arrow results.

Skyberg said additional courts helped the tournament run more efficiently this year, with matches completed in about five hours. Former PAS head coach Ed Gustafson is serving as site supervisor.
The MSHSL Class A individual state tournament begins on Thursday, Oct. 23, at the Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis.

Montevideo won the Class 3A section team tournament last week, topping MACA/WCA 5-2 in the championship at Huether Family Match Pointe on Wednesday, Oct. 8.
But, not before the Arrows delivered a scare during the opening round on Monday, Oct. 6, falling by one point.
PAS claimed all three doubles points while Montevideo won the four singles events.

“I thought we could compete in doubles, and win,” Skyberg said. “I was confident. I knew if we could keep our doubles teams intact, we could hopefully get those points, and we did.”
Boeke and Brockberg squared off versus Junia Fitzkappes and Emma Johnson, going the distance for a 6-7 (7-3), 7-5, 6-4 victory in the No. 1 slot.
Iva Witte and Hanson won by double bagel (6-0, 6-0) over Kamryn Bjerkeset and Becca Golden at No. 2. Aubrey Brockberg and Baatz defeated Gabrielle Augeson and Ava Spray, 6-4, 6-1.
However, Montevideo earned all the singles points with wins over No. 1 Weber, Ava Boucher at No. 2, Aleryn Brinkmeyer (No. 3) and Emma Smidt (No. 4). Senior Laura Minet was still unavailable to play due to injury.
