HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Arrows ready for section meet

Two Pipestone Area Schools’ junior golfers received all-Big South Conference honors based on their performances from regular-season meets this season.

Vivian Brockberg and Matt DeBates were so honored.

“Vivian getting all-conference was great to see,” PAS girls coach Grant Everson said. “It was a goal she had coming into this year because of how close she was last year. Hopefully, that will give her more confidence.”

PAS boys coach Craig Boeddeker was equally pleased with DeBates.

“Matt is by far, for me, the best example of a student-athlete who recognizes the responsibility one had to his sport,” the coach commented. “He prepares himself for competition and performs the very best he can.”

These Big South honors were achieved through a points system. On the boys’ side, DeBates placed sixth while Brockberg was ninth among the girls.

A complete list of all-conference honors has not been furnished to the Pipestone County Star yet.

Boeddeker reported DeBates is noted for carrying a small notebook. He takes meticulous notes on the driving range, practice green and during competition — similar to what you see professional golfers such as PGA champion Scottie Scheffler do during his round.

DeBates was the best finisher among golfers from the small-school ranks.

Boeddeker said DeBates has improved the most on putting this year — working on his mechanics. Extra attention has been paid to putting during training sessions at Pipestone Country Club.

During practice, golfers attempt 10 putts one foot away, eight at a distance of three feet and six from five feet away. Boeddeker said he looks at how the players are following putts with their eyes.

DeBates carded an 81 at the Big South Conference meet on Tuesday, May 13, at Dacotah Ridge Golf Club in rural Redwood Falls.

That was good enough for an eighth-place tie with Mason Buegler of New Ulm, Isaiah Homrighausen of St. Peter, Luverne’s Will Bergman and Hunter Anderson of Waseca.

Completing 18 holes in 4 hours, 41 minutes, DeBates recorded three birdies on Holes Nos. 6, 13 and 15. The course plays quite long for these scholastic golfers, measuring 6,642 yards for the boys — considerably less for the girls (5,055).

Brockberg found herself in a tie for 15th place at conference, which was conducted on Monday, May 12, also at Dacotah Ridge. The deadlock also featured Katherine Zelaya of Fairmont and Waseca’s Madison Rasche.

Vivian birdied the tough par-4 Hole No. 13, which measures 403 yards from the ladies’ tees. She also parred two holes and bogeyed five others for a 104.

BUFFALO LAKE — PAS head boys golf coach Craig Boedekker said he’s picked the six golfers who will compete at the Minnesota State High School League Section 3AA Tournament set for Thursday at Oakdale Golf Club.

Seniors Max Taubert and Tagon Woelber will join DeBates — along with Carson Van Hoecke, Bryer Evans, and Torin Schroyer. Olyvia Weber and Brockberg will play in the Section 3A girls event Wednesday, also at Oakdale.

“Oakdale is a very familiar course because we play it at least twice every year,” Everson said. “The girls should have a good understanding of the course, and what they need to do to succeed. I am excited to see how they both do.”

According to the scorecard gleaned on Oakdale’s website, the boys will most likely play from the blue tees measuring 6,374 yards and the girls red tees (5,108).

Boeddeker said Oakdale is a relatively flat course with lengthy par-4s but reachable par-5s. There are a mix of challenges from the par-3s. The course has 13 daunting water features in the form of small ponds and a couple of larger pools. Bunkers are scarce with few in the fairways to trip up the contestants.

Both coaches are confident Brockberg and DeBates have what it takes to qualify for the second round, which is set for Wednesday, May 28 — also at Oakdale.

The Section 3A meet will take place at Worthington’s GreatLIFE Golf & Fitness Club, with Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton and Russell-Tyler-Ruthton playing.

The MSHSL state tournaments will be June 10-11. Class AA is set for the Ridges at Sand Creek in Jordan and Class A will be at Pebble Creek Golf Club in Becker. Class AAA golfers will head to Bunker Hills in Coon Rapids.
