HIGH SCHOOL GOLF: Every stroke matters for PAS boys

Olyvia Weber scores 53 during dual versus Windom

Golf duals can be competitive.

That was certainly the case last Thursday, April 17, as Pipestone Area Schools boys defeated Big South Conference foe Worthington by one stroke. The Arrows finished with 178 strokes, and the Trojans 179 per results gleaned from iWanamaker.

“We’ve lost by a single stroke several times, or we’ve had ties,” said PAS head boys golf coach Craig Boeddeker, happy to be on the right side of a final result this go round.

These tournaments matter because of a point system in Big South matches, Boeddeker explained.

PAS golfers adequately handled winds, which picked up as a cold front moved through the county.

Arrow senior Max Taubert played soundly, resulting in a four-over par 40. Taubert was consistent throughout with four bogeys and five pars for a second-place finish behind overall medalist Spenser Nickel of Worthington (39). Nickel produced a fabulous round with six pars.

Matt DeBates, a junior, provided PAS’ second-lowest round with a 41. DeBates reached the green in two strokes on Hole No. 2 (a 605-yard, par-5 monster), and had a chance for an eagle putt before settling for par. He had three other pars and five bogeys, placing fourth.

Eighth-grader Carson Van Hoecke, part of the Arrows next generation of players, carded a 48 for seventh place. Van Hoecke finished with six bogeys. Bryer Smith, another eighth grader, also played well for PAS with a 49.

Weber scores 53

PAS junior Olyvia Weber put together her finest round ever during a league dual at Windom Country Club on Tuesday, April 15.

Weber scored a 53, which including a par on Hole No. 5, a par-5 measuring 418 from the ladies tees. She also scored three bogeys.

“Olyvia played extremely well,” PAS head girls coach Grant Everson said. “She kept the ball in play, and stayed out of trouble … which led to one of her best scores. She is capable of shooting scores like that.”

Everson said Windom’s course set up well for Weber, who performed admirably on the greens.

Teammate Vivian Brockberg was one stroke behind Weber, with two bogeys, including one on Hole No. 9 (a par-4 covering 237 yards).
