HIGH SCHOOL SOFTBALL: Season’s sweepings as Arrows down Huskies

Pitching, bunting carry PAS

The Pipestone Area Schools softball team allowed just two earned runs in a doubleheader sweep over Jackson County Central on Thursday, April 25.

Pitchers Mariah Moeller and Kaysa Douty thrilled the fans with lock-down performances, including Douty’s one-hitter versus the Huskies in Game Two.

The Arrows erupted for six runs in the bottom of the fourth during Game One, ultimately winning 7-1. PAS scored four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh to beat the Huskies, 12-1, in Game Two.

“The kids worked ahead in the count,” PAS head coach Robert Petersen noted. “They kept the walks down and worked quickly.”

With the kind of control and command mix coaches search for, both Douty and Moeller were able to locate pitches where they wanted.

Petersen also was complimentary of the Arrow defense, which included a diving stop from Alicia Haack at first base and running catch from Douty in center field — both during Game One.

The Arrows generated plenty of offense with a blend of bunting, baserunning and extra-base hits from both Jadyn Kor and Moeller. Kor smacked two triples in Game Two and Moeller doubled in each contest.

With the score level at 1-all in Game One, Brilee Rieck, Amyra Mahik and Kaitlyn Adelman all singled to open the fifth. However, Rieck was out while advancing on the basepaths. Addison Draper made it four straight singles, juicing the bases full of runners.

Douty then slugged a two-run double past second base, scoring Mahik and Haack. Kor and Moeller later belted back-to-back doubles in the frame. Kor’s double scored Draper, Douty and Mylee Weber, who also singled during the barrage.

Moeller finished the game with 76 strikes in 116 pitches, which meant she was throwing strikes about 66 percent of the time. Douty’s strike percentage was nearly the same in Game Two (58-of-90, 64.4%).

Kor finished with five RBI in Game Two, going 3-of-5 with two runs scored and seven total bases.

Douty scored three times and Weber twice in the contest as the top-three slots in the batting order did most of the damage. Kaitlyn Adelman also had two hits as part of the Arrow firepower.

Jackson County Central pitchers Mady Wachal and Brielle Tufvesson helped PAS with a whopping six hit batters, clogging the bases full of Arrows.
