Mark Moeller was officially approved as the third Pipestone Area Schools’ head track and field coach earlier this year.
The first was Robert “Bob” Nangle.
PAS coaches and athletes will continue Nangle’s tradition with the 49th Annual Arrow Relays on Tuesday, April 29, at Paulsen Sports Complex. The event was named in honor of Bob beginning with the 2004 meet.
Nangle died on Nov. 9, 2016, at St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester, the same city he was born. He was 77.
“Bob left a remarkable legacy,” Moeller said, “and I am honored to be a part of this, and help carry the torch.”

Field events begin at 4 p.m. The girls’ and boys’ 4×800-meter relays are the first two running events set for 4:30 and 4:45 p.m., respectively. A complete time schedule accompanies this story.
PAS will be joined by the following schools: Russell-Tyler-Ruthton, Southwest Minnesota Christian/Edgerton, Luverne, Worthington, Adrian-Ellsworth, Hills-Beaver Creek, Heron Lake-Okabena-Fulda, Murray County Central, Red Rock Central, Tracy-Milroy-Balaton and Westbrook-Walnut Grove. This list is tentative, and subject to change.
Moeller said running a meet “takes a village,” and there are a lot of moving pieces. Pipestone certainly knows about operating efficiency.

The track at Paulsen Sports Complex was resurfaced in 2024 with new striping and exchange zone markings.
Then there are the roughly 30 volunteers, which includes the entire PAS coaching staff plus additional school district employees who measure jumps, throws and pole vault springs.
Now PAS assistant coach Todd Tinklenberg said when he came to the school district, Nangle served as his mentor.
“He was everything to me,” said Tinklenberg of Nangle. “He was the individual who got me into coaching and teaching. I took him up on his word, and he mentored me.”
Back then, as today, coaches had specialties — however Tinklenberg noted Nangle was involved with every aspect of the program, not just middle to long distance runners.
Nangle groomed Tinklenberg as his eventual successor. Bob eventually retired as PAS activities director following the 2013-14 school year.

Tinklenberg said Nangle wanted female coaches as part of the mix. Erin Gordon and Evelyn Klein provided lasting impacts here. Klein ran locally for both Deubrook High School in White, S.D., and South Dakota State University.
Todd Texley, another current PAS coach with an emphasis on hurdles, also came into coaching through Nangle.
“Bob was my high school coach,” Texley said, “and he helped me with how I coach, and how to do it the right way.”
Nangle coached four Texleys during the 1970s, a hurdling lineage that also features Tom Texley, Tim Texley and Tony Texley.
During those days, the Arrows trained at the Pipestone County Fairgrounds. Now that’s a flashback.
Texley also said Nangle worked tirelessly behind the scenes, ensuring athletes had the right equipment for their sports and urging these students to stay in school, completing his or her education.
Nangle was inducted into the Minnesota State High School League Hall of Fame in May 2011.
During his own scholastic career at Madison High School, 45 minutes west of Pipestone, Nangle was part of a relay team that had a longstanding record at Howard Wood Field in Sioux Falls, S.D.
Nangle then moved to Pipestone in 1965 when he accepted a teaching position in the school district.
