HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING: Fruechtes fare well at BBE

Marshall's Chandler continues dominance in 172-pound class

BELGRADE — Both Mason Fruechte and Lane Fruechte had plenty of success at the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguar Invitational on Friday, Jan. 2.

Junior Mason Fruechte had the opportunity to wrestle against University of Minnesota signee Titan Friederichs from Watertown Mayer-Mayer Lutheran in the 127-pound championship bout.

“It was a great opportunity to face an opponent the caliber of that,” PAS head coach Paul Young said, “and see that level.”

Friederichs earned a 20-5 technical fall over Fruechte, with the match stopped at the 2-minute, 54-second mark.

Despite the outcome, Young said Fruechte wrestled tough. And he expects Mason to use this match as motivation.

Meanwhile, sophomore Lane Fruechte recorded his 50th victory of his career, continuing to move up the Arrow win chart.

Lane Fruechte earned third place at 121 pounds after Robert Gerisch from Milaca-Faith Christian received an injury default.

“For Lane to have 50 wins at his age is cool to see,” Young said. “I’m excited to see what he will do during the rest of his career, with more wins, pins and milestones. I’m happy for him, and he’s hungry for more.”

Overall, six Arrows reached the podium and finished sixth out of 11 teams at the event. PAS scored 78.5 points.

Young said he likes having the Jaguar Invitational on the schedule because it allows the Arrows a chance to square off against opponents from the northern half of Minnesota.

Finley Whipkey reached the third-place match, but lost to Red Rock Central’s Joseph Skarupa (who executed a pinning predicament at 0:38) in the 189-pound division.

Carlos Saenlouangraj recorded a hard-fought 10-8 decision over Keaston Thorpe from Ottertail Central for fifth place. Saenlouangraj had a key takedown late in the match to secure his place on the podium.

Two other Arrows placed sixth in Carloseriel Perez-Garcia (107) and Griffin Smidt (heavyweight).

As for Marshall, Russell-Tyler-Ruthton’s Brayden Chandler remained undefeated and won the 172-pound class in dominating fashion — with a 13-0 major decision over Tucker Hagen from Osakis.

Dawson DeCamp claimed the crown at 145 pounds on a 14-3 major decision versus Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa host Jace Mueller. Tucker Kraft earned the 189-pound title with a 6-0 decision (topping Watertown Mayer-Mayer Lutheran’s Oliver Larson).

During the day’s activities, Lane Fruechte also wrestled Marshall’s Lincoln Christensen (a 19-4 technical fall for Christensen). Joel Friederichs, Titan’s brother, then stopped Christensen on a 4-0 decision.

Mason Fruechte also registered a 4-2 decision over Keynan Coequyt, another one of Marshall’s talented grapplers in the semifinals.

This is the type of seasoning that will make both Fruechtes even better as the season continues.
