Homecoming activities at Pipestone Area Schools (PAS) started the third week of school when members of the senior class nominated king and queen candidates.

The nominees were announced on Sept. 17 and include Xavier Banjoko, Matthew DeBates, Austin Musch, Jackson Post and Cayden Zephier as the king candidates and Vivian Brockberg, Alivia Fruechte, Kaitlin Hanson, Samantha Stokesbary and Aurora Winsel as the queen candidates. The students said being selected as the homecoming candidates was exciting, humbling and an honor. They said they were grateful, and that it made them feel like they were respected.

Students in grades nine to 12 were scheduled to vote on Oct. 1 for one queen and one king. This year’s king and queen will then be announced during the coronation ceremony on Sunday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m. in the PAS auditorium. The doors will open at 3:30 p.m. and the cost to attend is $3 per person.

The pages for this year’s coronation ceremony are Octaevia Amundson, daughter of Logan and Jenny Amundson, and Liam Schroyer, son of Creighton and Tanya Schroyer. Brooke Einck and Kaysa Douty, who are members of the junior class committee, will be the emcees for the evening.

Coronation is being held on Sunday rather than Monday this year because girls varsity tennis section quarterfinals are on Monday, Oct. 6.

Coronation is the first of several homecoming activities planned throughout the week. Powder puff football will be played on Sunday night following coronation. On Friday, Oct. 10, there will be a parade that will begin at the school and travel east on Second Street Northwest, turn south on Third Avenue Northeast, then west on East Main Street, north on Eighth Avenue Southwest and then west on Second Street Northwest. Following the parade there will be a pep fest in the high school gymnasium.

This year’s homecoming theme is “Arrows Fly, Wolverines Say Goodbye.” That’s a reference to the Sibley East Wolverines, who the Arrows will play in the homecoming football game on Friday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m. at Paulsen Field.

The homecoming candidates were unanimous in forecasting a win for the Arrows. Their prognostications regarding the score ranged from 21-6 to a 48-0 shutout with an average final score of about 42 to 6.
A homecoming dance is planned for Friday evening after the game.
