The theme of this year’s Pipestone Area Schools (PAS) prom on Saturday, April 26 is Starry Night. The decorations will include large pictures of the painting by Vincent van Gogh, a moon, stars and swirls, and the colors navy blue and gold.
Members of the junior class committee select the theme, menu and other elements of the prom each year. Committee members include Kenadie Balster, Ericka Vivanco, Trevor Doppenberg, Vivian Brockberg, Kaitlin Hanson, Samantha Stokesbary, Alivia Fruechte and Aurora Winsel.
Prom festivities will begin at 6 p.m. with the grand march and the crowning of a prom king and queen, and prince and princess in the PAS gymnasium. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Tickets to the grand march are $10 for adults, $5 for students and senior citizens, and children ages 5 and under are free. Students received two grand march tickets when they purchased their tickets to prom. Additional tickets can be purchased from Jaime Danks, Spanish teacher and prom coordinator, or Kathy Baker, middle and high school administrative assistant, by Friday, April 25 or at the door on prom night.
The grand march will be followed by a time to take photos from about 6:45 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Prom attendees will then eat supper at 7:45 p.m. in the commons area. The meal will feature American-style food including a burger bar, hot dogs, cheesy potatoes, and macaroni and cheese, with cupcakes for dessert. The dance will begin at 8:30 p.m. and last until around 11:30 p.m.
Members of the junior class committee said the fashion trends for this year’s prom include corsets, strapless, silk dresses, and the popular colors are red, black, blue and green for the girls. They said the boys typically wear what their dates tell them to, and that gray or black suits with tennis shoes will likely be common, as usual.
Prom committee members said prom is a special occasion because it only happens once a year. They described it as a time to dress up and have fun with friends, to feel beautiful and have some self-care, and to recognize the students. They said family members and community members also seem to enjoy the festivities.
After the prom, students will take buses to Sky Zone in Sioux Falls for the after prom party. There will be games, prizes and gifts, food and more until around 3 a.m. when students will head back to Pipestone. Kristin Brockberg, a member of the volunteer committee of parents of juniors and seniors, said the after prom party would not be possible without donations and support from local businesses. Local businesses are also providing the food and supporting other aspects of the prom.
