LOCAL: Nelson joins Iowa Wild roster

Forward will wear sweater No. 16

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Wild has signed former Luverne High School standout Jaxon Nelson.

Iowa Wild general manager Matt Hendricks made the announcement official on Friday, Dec. 26.

This is a two-way contract from the remainder of the 2025-26 season, Hendricks said.

Iowa is an affiliate with the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild.

Nelson, a forward, scored once and had an assist in seven games with the Iowa Wild while on a professional tryout contract (PTO).

Before joining the Iowa Wild, Nelson played for the ECHL’s Iowa Heartland in Coralville, Iowa, where he racked up 17 points (on nine goals and eight assists) and six penalty minutes in 14 games.

A Magnolia native, Nelson scored three goals and had 10 points while playing for the Providence Bruins during the 2023-24 and 2024-25 seasons. 

Nelson (6-foot-4, 216 pounds) captained the University of Minnesota hockey team during the 2023-24 season.

He also has playing experience with the Sioux Falls Stampede and Omaha Lancers, with 75 points and 67 penalty minutes in 164 USHL games.

Nelson will wear sweater No. 16, the Iowa Wild reported.

The team is currently 10-21-1 on the season (22 points), with a minus-38 goal differential. Most recently, the Ontario (Calif.) Reign defeated the Wild, 3-0, on Sunday. Jan. 4.

Iowa Wild home games are played at Casey’s Center, streamed on AHLTV at FloHockey. The team is currently in the midst of a multi-game road swing, returning home for a game versus the Toronto Marlies at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 16.
