Lynette Klein was born to Lawrence and Doris (Eriksrud) Haugen on January 20, 1952, the second of four children. She had many fond memories from her childhood to include helping on the family farm and having fun with the family’s pet raccoons — which became quite the attraction to visitors who stopped by! She held close to her heart memories of attending church in the country at Clare Lutheran and Bell Country School.
After graduating from Bell School in 8th grade, she attended Flandreau High School graduating with the class of 1970. She then attended Sioux Valley School of Nursing in Sioux Falls, S.D. and worked as a nurse in coronary care at Sioux Valley and McKennan Hospitals until 1976.
On June 29, 1974 she was united in marriage to her best friend, Vince Klein. They made their home on a farm near Dell Rapids, S.D. This is where they welcomed their first child, Brian. It is then she decided to stay home full-time to raise their family and work side-by-side with Vince on the farm. In 1978 they moved to her family farm near Flandreau and welcomed three more children – Amy, Andrea and Bradley.
Lynette was a true country girl. She loved farm life and had a natural ability to work with animals. She could save any struggling calf and soon have it healthy and back with its mother. She was always excited to find a new nest of baby kittens in the barn and show them to her kids and later did the same with her grandkids. Cattle, cats, dogs, chickens, and even raccoons, she cared for them all! More often than not you’d find her in the field running the silage truck, tillage equipment, tractor and grain cart or raking hay.
Not only did she have a natural way on the farm, she was also a natural caregiver to many. Family, friends and neighbors were recipients of her compassionate care throughout their life and in their times of need. She was selfless and always put others’ needs before her own. Her kindness was genuine and her thoughtfulness was endless. She enjoyed opening their home to others whether it was hosting large family reunions, a small group of friends for coffee and dessert, or having her grandchildren spend the night, she welcomed them all in. She also loved road trips and bigger get-a-ways with special friends and family.
Lynette really shined as a Gramma. She loved being with her grandkids. Whether it was rocking a grandbaby to sleep, playing with kittens and puppies in the barn, collecting eggs from the chickens, riding horses bareback or making yummy treats in the kitchen she was always up for fun and made their time together special.
She was a member of Ss. Simon and Jude Catholic Church where she taught CCD classes, helped decorate the church and worked in the kitchen at many funerals. Her sincere hardworking approach came through in all she did. A person of strong faith, she saw the best in others and relied on that faith to get through tough times. She quietly bore the cross she carried the last few months as she encountered unexpected health issues. Lynette passed away at her home surrounded by her family on Wednesday, July 2, 2025 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.
She is survived by her husband, Vince of Flandreau, children, Brian (Angela) Klein of Flandreau, Amy (Daniel) Folkerts of Pipestone, Minn., Andrea (Jesse) Knox of Highmore, S.D., and Bradley Klein of Flandreau; grandchildren, Jacob, Justin, Kase, Grace and Brody Klein, Kendra, Rylee, Maesa and Charlie Folkerts, Gabbie Jo, Jessa, Lawson and Brecken Knox; her mother, Doris Haugen of Flandreau; siblings, Larry Haugen of Flandreau, Sharon Haugen Wittrock of Colman and Richard (Sharla) Haugen of Colman; aunt Arleen Tillison; brothers-in-law, Bill (Gayle) Klein, Jim (Lucy) Klein, Ron (Carol) Klein; sister-in law, RoseAnn (John) Mousel; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
