The Pipestone Area Marching Arrows took second in Class 2A and earned several caption awards Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Quad States Regional Championships at the DakotaDome in Vermillion.
The Arrows earned a score of 78.9, which Director Zach Ploeger said was their highest score of the season. It was just 1.6 points behind Pierce High School, which was the only other band in Class 2A. The Arrows also earned caption awards for Best Percussion, Best Colorguard, Best Overall Effect and Best Visuals.
“There are five caption awards and we took all of them except for the one in music,” Ploeger said.
The Quad States Regional Championships was the seventh and final competition of the season for the Pipestone Area Marching Arrows. The band started preparing for the season in June and has been working on this year’s shows regularly since then.
“It is a big commitment, but at the same time you’re with your friends, you’re with people, you’re doing something that you like and it’s good,” Ploeger said.
Looking back on the season as a whole, Ploeger said it was a year of growth and that he thought the band program took a big leap forward. He said the band was larger this year, had better abilities and performed at a higher quality. The band will lose only one senior next year — Drum Major Sefora Gamboa Herrera — and Ploeger said that if the young members of the band stick with the program, it could set the Marching Arrows up for continued growth and improvement.
The band will conclude its season with the annual indoor band concert at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 26 at the Pipestone Area Schools middle and high school gymnasium. During the concert, which is free to attend, the band will perform indoor versions of its parade show “Toxic” and field show “Mirror, Mirror.” There will also be awards and a slide show recap of the season.
