Mary Steenstra, 93, Holland, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2025 at Pipestone County Hospice House in Pipestone.
Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 15 at St. James Lutheran Church in Holland with Rev. David Petrich officiating.
Casket bearers were Mary’s grandchildren, Elise Polt, Jason Bush, Justin Steenstra, Danny Steenstra, Spencer Steenstra, Kara March, Jeremy Bush, Shaina Armstrong, Cullen Curott, Chase Schelhaas, Jonathan Steenstra, David Steenstra Lauren Curott and Sadie Steenstra.
Interment was in the Holland Cemetery in Holland.
Mary Helen Steenstra was born on April 16, 1932 to Henry and Elise (Lien) Sundem on a farm near Hills-Beaver Creek. She was raised in that area and graduated from Hills High School in 1950. She then attended Sioux Falls College where she took classes for teaching. She taught at the country school near Hills for one year after college.
She married Floyd John Steenstra on Oct. 20, 1951. The couple made their home in rural Holland.
Mary worked for many years in retail sales; she worked at Thompson’s Dress Store, Whipple’s Clothing, the Thoughtfulness Shop, A & S Drug, and Rexall Drug in Pipestone. She also volunteered at the Pipestone Hospital Gift Shop.
She moved to Ridge View Estates and was living there until entering the care of the Pipestone County Hospice House.
She was a member of St. James Lutheran Church in Holland. She was actively involved in church as she participated in Ladies Aid, taught Sunday School, and served om the altar committee. She was also active in the community as a member of the Holland Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by her children, Mike Steenstra, Holland, Charlie (Deb) Steenstra, Pipestone, Loren (Colleen) Steenstra, Jackson and Lori Curott, Princeton; 14 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; son-in-law, Arly Schelhaas; brothers, Richard Sundem, Sioux Falls, S.D. and Orval (Bonnie) Sundem, Hills and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd; daughter, Mary Schelhaas; granddaughter, Erica Steenstra; her parents, Henry and Elise; siblings Doris (Dewey) Dooyema and Harlowe (LaVane) Sundem and sister-in-law, Carol Sundem.
