Meats evaluation team to attend national competition

The Pipestone Area School (PAS) Board during its Aug. 25 meeting approved an overnight trip for the Pipestone Area FFA meat evaluation team to attend the 2025 National FFA Convention in Indianapolis in October.

Natalie Resch, PAS agriculture science and FFA teacher, said the team of three seniors and one junior qualified for the contest that will be held at Purdue during the national convention. She and possibly Coach Phil Berg will be attending the convention as well. They will leave Tuesday, Oct. 28 and return Saturday, Nov. 1. Resch said the students will get to tour a meat processing plant during the convention.

“It’s really kind of cool to see that processing side of livestock production, going from the live animal to the actual product that we’re able to consume at the end,” Resch said.

In addition to granting permission to go on the trip, the school board approved paying $800 for a substitute teacher for four days and $1,000 for transportation in a school vehicle for a total cost of $1,800 to the district.

The Pipestone Area FFA Chapter, Pipestone Ag Chamber Committee and Minnesota Livestock Breeders Association will pay for other expenses including meal functions, hotels, registration costs and other expenses.

School Board members commended the team on their accomplishment and expressed their appreciation for the program and Berg’s coaching. Resch said this was her third meats evaluation team to earn a trip to the convention in her three years teaching.
