Minnesota Ag News – Crop progress and condition


Minnesota had 4.1 days suitable for fieldwork for the week ending April 28, 2024, according to the USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service. Fieldwork included tillage and planting before the weekend rain showers arrived. Livestock were doing well and no losses were reported.

Topsoil moisture supplies were rated 5 percent very short, 16 percent short, 64 percent adequate, and 15 percent surplus. Subsoil moisture supplies were rated 7 percent very short, 22 percent short, 65 percent adequate, and 6 percent surplus.

Corn planted was at 30 percent, one week ahead of last year and 4 days ahead of the 5-year average. Soybeans planted reached 14 percent, 9 days ahead of last year and 5 days ahead of the 5-year average.

Barley planted was at 30 percent with the crop 4 percent emerged. Oats planted was at 50 percent, with 15 percent emerged. Spring wheat planted was 48 percent with 5 percent emerged.

Farmers began planting dry edible beans at 1 percent. Potatoes planted were at 19 percent. Sugarbeets planted reached 81 percent.
